Honorable Mention: SS Vicente Conde (.224, 0 HRs, 16 RBIs)

While Vicente Conde’s numbers aren’t the greatest, you have to remember that the Yankees’ ninth round pick in this year’s draft out of Vanderbilt did not start the season with the team. This was due to the Commodores’ run to winning the College World Series over Virginia. Conde played 38 games and made some fantastic plays at the shortstop position, despite making seven errors.

As far as his offense goes, the shortstop did have four hits in his last three games to finish the season on a high note. He had eight RBI’s in each of the two months that he played in. The one aspect of his game that stood out to me this season was his plate discipline. Keep in mind, the Baby Bombers, as a team, were third in the league in walks behind the two teams who competed for the championship (Tri-City and State College). The 20-year-old shortstop had 19 walks in 38 games, including 12 of those coming during the month of August (21 games). The Yankees are not deep at shortstop in the minor league level, so keep an eye on Conde’s glove and his improvement at the plate as he raised his average from .213 in July to .243 in August.
