Sunday was a mixed day for the Baby Bombers. There were five games played and the New York Yankees’ Minor League affiliates won three. Sunday saw the Trenton Thunder, Tampa Yankees and Charleston RiverDogs pick up wins, while the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders and Staten Island Yankees came up on the short end. A two home run day from an unlikely candidate would pace Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, while the Thunder needed just one inning to pick up the victory. Staten Island got a quality start and were able to fend off a mini-rally in the bottom of the ninth, after they has put up a two spot in the top of the frame.

Tampa (68-65) and Staten Island (34-33) are the only two teams besides both division-leading Gulf Coast League Yankees to own a winning record. With the amount of injuries the New York Yankees have had in 2014 the mediocre records are understandable. The constant shuffling of players at the higher levels leads to inconsistency.

Even though the teams are playing average baseball, the home stretch of the Minor League season should be intriguing for Yankee fans. Players are looking to finish up the season strong, and earn a big league call-up in September or solidify their spot for next season. With the New York Yankees trying to scratch out wins to get in to the playoffs, any player called up to the Bronx will be counted on to have in impact for the big-league club.

TRIPLE A

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (65-71) lose to Rochester Red Wings (73-64) 5-4

Zach Nuding started and went five innings, allowing just one run on six hits. He struck out three and walked a pair. The solo home run he allowed in the second inning was the only blemish on his line. Chase Whitley came in to relieve Nuding and pitched two innings without giving up a run. Nick Rumbelow came in to pitch the eighth and the flood gates opened. he allowed four runs on four hits and a walk in just a third of an inning. offensively, Ramon Flores carried the team Sunday. His two number two homers and three RBI out of the number two spot were the majority of the RailRiders offense. The long balls were Flores’ sixth and seventh of the season. Jose Pirela and Rob Refsnyder each picked up two hits and their averages now sit at .308 and .307, respectively. Both playes are candidates for a call to the big leagues next month. Kyle Roller also had a pair of hits, on a day the SWB had fourteen base runners, but a lack of timely hitting meant they could only plate four runs.

Bryan Mitchell (4-2, 4.15 ERA) will be on the mound for the RailRiders Monday when they look to earn a split of the four game series against the Red Wings. Alex Meyer (6-6, 3.43 ERA) gets the nod for Rochester. First pitch from Frontier Field is set for 7:05.

DOUBLE A

Trenton Thunder (64-70) defeat Harrisburg Senators (49-84) 7-3

The Thunder jumped out to an early lead against the lowly Senators, scoring in each of the first four innings, including four runs in the second inning.  Trenton did not allow Austin Voth to record an out in the second inning before being pulled. Jake Cave got things going with a lead-off home run in the first. He was the only Thunder player with multiple hits (2) and is now hitting .270. Rob Segedin hit his eighth home run in the fourth inning and drew three walks from the clean-up spot. Yankees top pitching prospect, Luis Severino made the start and went two and two-thirds innings, allowing a run on four hits. He struck out two. Despite giving up the run, Severino’s ERA sits at a cool 2.66. The bullpen came in to relieve Severino and blanked Harrisburg until James Pazos allowed two runs in the ninth. Cesar Cabral picked up his first win for the Thunder.

Trenton will be the last stop for the twenty-year-old Severino this season, but if he can finish 2014 on a high note, he should be in Scranton early next season if he doesn’t start the season with the RailRiders.

Dan Camarena (1-6, 6.53 ERA) looks to get on track when the Thunder go for their fifth straight win Monday when they open a four-game road series against the Akron RubberDucks. Cody Anderson (4-9, 4.76 ERA) will be on the mound for Akron. First pitch from Canal Park is slated for 7:05.

Low-A

Charleston RiverDogs (66-67) lose to Rome Braves (53-80) 5-4

A poor showing against a last place team saw the RiverDogs slip under .500. Rookie Davis started and went five and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on six hits and struck out six. Yeicok Calderon had another multi-hit game, going two-for-six with a double and an RBI. Calderon is batting .344 for Charleston.

The RiverDogs are off Monday. They resume play Tuesday at home against the Greenville Drive. Justin Kamplain (0-0, 3.86 ERA) will make the start for Charleston. Greenville has not announced a starter. First pitch from Joseph P. Riley Ballpark is 7:05.
