Yankees Minor League Scores and Recaps

Tuesday was a successful day for the Baby Bombers. There were only three games played due to off days and a rain out. The Yankees’ Minor League affiliates were able to win two of the three games. Weather played a factor for the second consecutive day, as Staten Island was unable to get their game against Connecticut going due to rain. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre was threatened with heavy rain as well, but managed to get their game in.The biggest highlight of the day was former top prospect, Manny Banuelos making his first start for Scranton this season. In a season full of mediocrity at both the Major and Minor League levels, this is something Yankee fans hopefully put some faith in.

Banuelos was not alone Tuesday, as all three starting pitchers turned in stellar outings. If it wasn’t for a few bullpen hiccups in Trenton, the youngsters would have swept the three games. Tuesday seemed like so many other days for the Yankee Minor Leaguers: just can’t seem to put it all together. Here’s the rest of today’s Minor League Roundup.

TRIPLE A

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (59-64) defeat Louisville Bats (60-64) 6-1

Banuelos made the start and was lights-out over five innings. He allowed just one run on two hits and struck out four. Had it not been for a wild pitch in the third inning that allowed a runner to advance to second and then score on a single, Banuelos may have been unblemished through five innings. The bullpen was able to shut Louisville down the rest of the way. The offense collected eleven hits on the day. Zoilo Almonte led the charge with three. Rob Refsnyder and Kyle Roller each added two hits. Jose Pirela broke out of his slump with a triple and two RBI. Prior to Tuesday, he had been hitless in his last five games.

The RailRiders will host Louisville again in the third game of this four game series Wednesday. Pat Venditte (2-4, 3.56 ERA) will be on the mound for SWB, facing off against David Holmberg (1-6, 4.74 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.

Trenton Thunder (59-64) lose to Altoona Curve (53-70) 3-2

Joel De La Cruz got the start for Trenton, and was dominant through five shut out innings. He allowed just three hits and a walk, and struck out five. The bullpen let De La Cruz down however. Phil Wetherell came in to relieve the starter, and allowed a run without recording an out. Second Round pick Jacob Lindgren pitched two-thirds of an inning clearly was having control issues, as he issued three walks and allowed another run. Francisco Rondon gave the Thunder a solid two and a third innings of shutout ball before Nick Goody gave up the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Offensively the team collected seven hits, but struck out the same amount of times. Mason Williams and Ali Castillo each had two hits, and Tyler Austin Belted his ninth home run.

These two teams will meet again Wednesday for the second game of their three game series at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Gil Heredia (4-1, 3.48 ERA) will be on the mound for the Thunder. Jhonathan Ramos (4-5, 4.26 ERA) gets the nod for Altoona. First pitch is 7:00.

Chalreston RiverDogs (60-62) defeat Hickory Crawdads (70-51) 3-2

Luis Niebla went five innings for Charleston, allowing just one run on seven hits. He struck out one and issued one base-on-balls. The solid outing gave him his second win and lowered his ERA to 2.70. Angel Rincon came in and pitched two and two-thirds innings, allowing one run. Eric Ruth came in to record a four-out save, his fifth of the year. Yeicok Calderon had two hits, including his second home run in three games, and Miguel Andujar also had a pair of hits. Mike Ford and Michael O’Neill each drove in a run.

The win was the second in a row against the Crawdads and guarantees a series win. The RiverDogs look for the sweep Wednesday afternoon, when Rookie Davis (6-8, 4.54 ERA) faces off against Collin Wiles (1-2, 3.32 ERA). First pitch from Joseph P. Riley Jr, Ballpark is 12:05.

The Tampa Yankees (59-61) had an off day Tuesday and will resume play Wednesday against the Lakeland Flying Tigers. Miguel Sulbaran (2-3, 3.05 ERA) looks to continue his success against Edgar De La Rosa (7-8, 2.68 ERA). First pitch from George M. Steinbrenner Field is set for 7:00.
