Yankees To Scout Rusney Castillo

Apparently the Yankees, and many other teams, read my article on Rusney Castillo earlier this month. According to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman, Castillo’s workout on Saturday will draw quite a crowd. Nearly half of MLB will be represented in a showcase for Castillo in Miami.

According to the post, Castillo has drawn comparissons to two current Yankees in Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury, as well as former Yankee Kenny Lofton.

If the Yankees were to land Castillo, they need to get him at-bats quickly in the minors, and if he develops, eventually bring him up. If he can play right field, and if he’s as fast as the scouts say, that’s some outfield with Gardner and Ellsbury with Carlos Beltran playing every so often.

The outfield free agent market for next year has guys who are struggling (Colby Rasmus) veteran guys (Torii Hunter, Michael Cuddyer) platoon guys (Jonny Gomes, Chris Denorfia) and two interesting Orioles in Nick Markakis and Nelson Cruz.

If the Yanks can grab Castillo, and he pans out, it’ll be one less thing they have to worry about moving forward for a team that has a lot of work to do, not only now, but this off-season to get back to the top of the mountain.
