Around the DSL: Yankees Youngsters Surging

The Dominican Baby Bombers put together winning weeks. The Dominican Summer League Yankees 1 and Yankees 2 both stayed atop the standings with impressive showings. Here are the highlights of the week that was, as we go Around the DSL.

DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE: BOCA CHICA SOUTH

The DSL Yankees 1 bounced back from last week’s horrid output. They went 4-2 on the week bringing their overall record to 19-13. The DSL Yanks 1 sit three games out of first place all alone in third place. 19-year-old left fielder Pedro Urena, who has essentially led the team in every offensive category all season, was at his best yet this week. He accumulated 9 hits in six games, blasting two home runs and tallying nine RBI. He know has a .336 average with 6 home runs and 27 RBI over 28 games. Third baseman Victor Rey had a monster week as well. Celebrating his 19th birthday, Rey smacked nine hits on the week with five RBI. He is now batting .417 on the season while getting on base at a .525 lick. Raudy Guzman continues to lead the pitching staff. The 6’1”, 211 pound, right-handed 19-year old lowered his ERA to 0.64 with yet another performance without allowing an earned run. Right-handed Adonis Rosa picked up his first win of the season with three inning, four strikeout, shutout performance. He now sits at 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA on the season.

DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE BOCA CHICA NORTH

The DSL Yankees 2 also remained in third place in the Boca Chica North division after a 4-2 week. They sit at an impressive 20-12 seven games out of first place. LF Carlos Vidal refuses to cool down. The 18-year old sensation tallied nine hits on the week and is now batting .364 on the season. More impressively, Vidal has walked more ties than he has struck out (20 BB/ 14K) accounting for his .500 on base percentage. Soon to be 19-year old catcher Algeni Mateo was the DSL Yanks 2 player of the week. Mateo had a monster week, smacking 14 hits highlighted by a 5-6 night in which he also had a home run and four RBI. He is now batting .386 with two home runs and 17 RBI since joining the Yankees second squad. Rolando Calvo, the 21-year-old righty, paced the staff going 1-1 on the week. He now stands at 4-1 on the season with a 3.50 ERA.
