O’Brien and Severino Selected to Play in Futures Game
Two Yankees’ prospects have been selected to play in the prestigious Futures Game on July 13th at Target Field. The Futures Game highlights the top performing players in the Minor Leagues this season, and lets these players showcase their talent during All-Star weekend for Major League Baseball. Trenton Thunder catcher/third baseman Peter O’Brien will play for the U.S. team, and Tampa Yankees’ pitcher Luis Severino will play for the World team.
Peter O’Brien this year has absolutely raked. In High-A Tampa, O’Brien hit .321 with 10 home runs and 19 RBI in just 30 games before being promoted to Double-A Trenton. The power has continued for O’Brien at Trenton, as he has hit another 15 home runs and has 35 RBI over 42 games. His 25 total home runs rank third in Minor League Baseball behind super prospects Joey Gallo and Kris Bryant. O’Brien’s power has caught scout’s eyes and hopefully will continue to move through the Minor Leagues quickly.
Luis Severino has been lights out on the mound this year, flashing some very promising and projectable talent. The 20-year-old dominated Charleston this season, going 3-2 with a 2.79 ERA and a whopping 70 strikeouts in 67.2 innings. Severino was recently rewarded for his dominance as he was promoted to High-A Tampa, where he made his debut June 20th striking out eight in 4.2 innings.
