Subway Series Preview Podcast: Bronx Edition

While the series finale with the Tampa Bay Rays did not go well for CC Sabathia and company, the New York Yankees were still able to take yet another series from their AL East rivals and are a half game back of the Ray and Baltimore Orioles for the AL East division lead. Plus, the Yankees got some great starting pitching from both Andy Pettitte and Ivan Nova in this series. Now, Interleague Play resumes again and it starts tonight against the crosstown rivals who are actually playing some very good baseball and are one of the surprises in the National League.

Yes, I am talking about the New York Mets. The Mets are in 3rd place in the NL East, but at 32-26, they are only a game and a half behind the Washington Nationals. Under manager Terry Collins, they have developed a scrappy mindset where they never throw in the towel and fight until the last out. True, they do not hit the long ball, but they are led by, in my opinion, the National League MVP so far in third baseman David Wright. Even with the injuries to Jason Bay and Ruben Tejada, the Mets still are in good position to hang around all year long.

So, why is this series much more compelling than recent years? Well, just look at who at the Mets are throwing tonight. Johan Santana is trying to build off of his last start, which was the first no-hitter in the fifty year history of the New York franchise. It sounds difficult, but at least the Yankees do not draw nine win R.A. Dickey in this series.

The Yankees will throw Hiroki Kuroda, Phil Hughes, and Andy Pettitte in this series while the Mets will throw Dillon Gee and Jonathon Niese in this series in addition to Johan.

For this podcast, I recorded an interview Thursday night with Matt Musico from RisingApple.com to talk about the state of the Mets, the pitching matchups, the struggles of Ike Davis and Sandy’s Bargain Basement Bullpen. In turn, he asked me Yankees’ questions about Derek Jeter, life after Mariano Rivera, and who needs to pick it up in the Yankee order right now.

As a program reminder, we are recording the Braves’ edition of the previews Sunday night at 8 PM EST with Fred Owens of Tomahawktake.com to talk about Andruw Jones‘ former team.
