Pettitte chillin’ till the next episode

The always classy New York Post showed up at Andy Pettitte’s doorstep on Thursday night to find out if the lefty will pitch for the Yanks in 2011.

"I don’t (know if I’m going to pitch this year). I’m just chilling out, hanging. I’m relaxing. If I had something, y’all would know. If I knew exactly what I was doing, y’all would know…I haven’t done much. That’s for sure. I was over in Hawaii, so I’m tan. My daughter keeps telling me I’m getting more gray hairs every day, so I don’t know about that."

The 38-year-old Pettitte, who sounded like a mix between the Fresh Prince and a Narc with that quote, said he doesn’t want to be a distraction or create news. In fact, he told the Yankees before the Winter Meetings that the team should prepare for the season as if he will retire.

"I don’t want to be a story. I really don’t want (the Yanks) to worry about me. I just want them to go, just go on."

While I admire what he’s trying to do here, the team really can’t “go on” and prepare for the season without knowing what he plans to do. As discussed before, the free agent market for starters is baron and if he is going to pitch they really shouldn’t be forced to lose prospects by making a trade for a starter. I love Pettitte and always will, but he is treading dangerously close to Brett Favre territory.

How can you not know what you want to do at this time? It seems like this is a ploy to get more money from the team. Apparently the Yanks are willing to give him around $13 million for a one-year deal. He earned $11.75 million last year.

The way I see it, the more time it takes for him to make a decision the worse the news will probably be. But for what it’s worth, Pettitte didn’t sign until late January last year.

The Yanks’ rotation, as of right now, consists of CC, AJ and Philthy. After that it will most likely be SuperNova and Sergio Mitre. So PLEASE come back for another year Andy. Pretty please.
