As the Yanks edged the Asstros 4-3 on Friday, Andy Can I Pettitte (8-1) recorded his 200th win in pinstripes and 237th overall (237-136) to move past Whitey Ford and into a tie for 58th place (Clark Griffith, Waite Hoyt) on MLB’s all-time wins list.
He did so in convincing fashion. Pettitte went 7 1/3 innings and gave up three runs — two earned — on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts. He ended the night one punch-out short of catching Ron Guidry (1,778) for second on the franchise K list. Andrew Eugene retired 11 batters in a row at one point and 16 of 17 overall, and has now given up two earned runs or less in 10 of his 12 starts this season. In other words: this motherfucker can still pitch at age 37 (he’ll turn 38 on Tuesday).
"It’s great, it really is. It is special. There’s not a lot of guys that have won that many as a Yankee…I don’t (think about personal milestones), not really. Things like that are not bothering me…It was a little awkward (facing former team), there’s not a lot of guys left. Lance, obviously, is one of my best friends so it was good to get him out. Him and Roy (Oswalt) and a few of the staff are really the only guys I know over there…I’ve just been feeling real comfortable with all my pitches to throw them all the time. A lot of good luck, and mentally and mechanically I’ve been in a good place…I just feel very fortunate and blessed to play for this organization, I think that’s why I’ve been able to be successful."
Pettitte left in the seventh with one out and runners on second and third, and Joba came in before surrendering a sac fly to Keppinger. Joba then fanned Lance Berkman to end the inning, which gave way to a 2007-era fist pump. Mo shit all over Houston to sit the side down in order in the ninth to secure the win and his 15th save.
"I didn’t want to come out but Joba did a great job, fortunately we were able to get a big out against Lance…and then Mo came in and does what he does always."
Here’s another little tidbit I think you’ll enjoy: Pettitte and Hughes have combined to go 16-2 with a 2.59 ERA…oh yeah, they’re the third and fifth starters, respectively. Have two teammates ever tied for the Cy Young before?
As for the Yanks offense, it looked like the Astros O usually does. The team managed just five hits and was victimized by Wife Beater all night. Myers went seven innings and limited the Yanks to four runs on the aforementioned five hits with five Ks and three walks. It seems Cervelli can only hit with runners in scoring position when there’s two outs, as he stroked a two-out, two-run, bases-loaded single in the first. Swish Dog had a bases-loaded walk and Tex added an RBI single. Cano went 1-for-4 and scored a run; you know you’ve been hot when you go 1-for-4 and your average drops.
The story of the game, though, had to be Kevin Russo’s at-bat in the fifth. “Mad Dog” went down 0-2 before battling back to draw a walk and steal second. He scored the eventual game-winning run on Tex’ bloop single.
Perhaps most importantly, the Rays got lit up by the Fish, 14-9, so the Yanks are just one game back of the top spot in the AL East (and in all of baseball).
Other news:
- A sweet running catch by Michael Bourn in the seventh put an end to Derek Jeter’s 28-game on-base streak. Jeet went 0-for-4.
- The Yanks are 20-7 at home and match a season high by going 15 games over .500 (38-23).
- GM Brian Cashman confirmed that A-Rod will not play before Tuesday (tendinitis in right hip flexor). The good news is that this injury is in a different area than the hip he had operated on last year.
Girardi:
"It’s day-by-day but I wouldn’t count on him in there tomorrow, heh, heh, heh. So I guess that’s not really day-by-day. I’ll continue to talk to our trainers and doctors, hopefully sooner than later."
- Gardy was diagnosed with a Grade 1 sprain of the ligament in his left thumb, but took BP and threw today. He said neither caused him any pain and he’ll “hopefully play tomorrow or Sunday.”
- Besides Pettitte, Whitey Ford and Red Ruffing are the only Yankees to win 200 games.
- Joe West must have jizzed his pants tonight because the time of game was two hours and 19 minutes, which could be an all-time record for the Yanks.
