Jav another one

Javy Vazquez pitched brilliantly, taking a no-no into the sixth inning, to help the Yanks avoid their first three-game sweep (although they were swept in a two-game set by the Rays on May 19-20) with a 4-3 victory over the Blue Jays.

The Good:

  • “Home Run” Javy went seven innings and gave up two runs on one hit with a season-high nine strikeouts to four walks to see his ERA drop to 5.63. The guy Yankee fans love to hate has now turned in solid performances in five of his last six appearances (4-2, 2.73 ERA, .171 BAA). What’s more incredible is that he finagled a 4-2 record with absolutely no help from the offense; in his five starts over that period (not counting the four-pitch appearance against the Red Cox) the O averaged 2.2 runs per game. Holy shit. Also, Vazquez improved to 3-1 with a 1.67 ERA and .186 BAA in six career starts at the Rogers Centre and moved past Juan Marichal into 44th place on MLB’s all-time strikeout list (2,305). Next up is Rube Waddell with 2,316 Ks.

Javy:

"I’m  just happy we’re able to win a game here and score some runs. I’m just happy that we won…It’s better when the guys score and you have a little room for error, but you want to limit your mistakes because one run could mean the game."

You got that? It’s better when the team scores runs. Write that down.

  • As Derek Jeter scored in the eighth inning, he passed Lou Brock for 43rd place on MLB’s all-time runs scored list (1,611).
  • After Joba looked like an a-hole while giving up a run while recording two outs in the eighth, Damaso Marte came in and struck out Adam Lind to end the frame. I didn’t agree with removing Joba, who had just recorded a double play to clear the bases and get out of any further damage, but it worked out in the end so I’ll take it. Then Mo came in for the ninth and, surprise surprise, shut down the Jays for a 1-2-3 inning on five pitches. It was his 13th save of the year.
  • The eighth inning. The Yanks scored all of their runs in the eighth, as they brought 10 men to the plate and went through four Toronto pitchers. But Cervelli and Gardner both got plunked in the frame.
  • After going 0-for-12 with four strikeouts in the first two games of this set, RBInson Cano had a 3-for-4 day and drove in the eventual game-winning two runs on a double in the eighth. That’s how you bounce back from a “slump”…take notes Mark Teixeira.

The Bad:

  • A-Rod left the game in the bottom of the ninth with soreness in his groin. According to RAB, Girardi said after the game that A-Rod felt no pain and they were just playing it safe. Hopefully the off day on Monday will help Big Al get back on the field Tuesday as the Yanks open up a three-game set in Baltimore…mainly because A-Rod owns the O’s — he’s cracked 51 homers and recorded 167 RBI against them (more RBI vs. BAL than any other team).
  • The Yanks went 4-for-30 with RISP over the course of this series. FML. Hopefully that will improve against the O’s, who were riding a 10-game losing streak before beating the Red Cox 4-3 in 11 innings on Sunday.
  • Home plate umpire Bruce Dreckman. This clown was blowing calls all game to the point where Swish Dog, A-Rod and even DEREK JETER were arguing with him. If Jeet argues with you, you know you did something wrong. Girardi also got tossed after Swisher was incorrectly called out on a check swing in the eighth. It was Girardi’s second ejection of the season and the 10th of his managerial career (eighth as a Yankee).

Girardi on Swish Dog’s check swing fiasco in the eighth:

"I’m able to put things behind us and know that there are days when we’re not going to score, I understand that I’ve been around long enough. But I was really frustrated by that call because that’s a big call in that game."
  • Innings 1-7 and 9. The Yanks couldn’t muster any offense at all until they got to the Toronto bullpen. It was pathetic and almost unbearable to watch, thank God Javy was lights out or they’d have probably been swept.
  • Tex still looks like a dingleberry at the plate. He went 0-for-4 with a walk Sunday, but did score the team’s fourth run on Cano’s double. However, he is hitting .211 on the year (did I mention it’s June 6th!!!) and just .184 over his last 10 games. Something must be done, expect a post on him tomorrow.
  • The Yankees 16-inning scoreless streak was about half of Ubaldo Jimenez’. That’s pathetic.
