Yanks even Fall Classic, 1-1

The Yanks beat the Phils 3-1 Thursday to tie the World Series up at one game apiece behind a great showing from AJ and timely hitting from Tex and Godzilla. Here are some random thoughts I had while watching Game 2:

  • Molina’s pickoff of Werth in the fourth really changed the momentum of the series (or at lesat the game). It was also a pretty good throw; I know I’ve been ragging on him, but Molina really showed me something with that play. HUGE. Keep it up you fat bastard!
  • AJ Burnett was on point: 7 innings, 1 R, 4 H, 9 K’s to 2 BBs. He pitched well all night sans a few mistakes here and there (plus that A-Rod play on the Stairs RBI single should’ve been made. I’m not saying he should have gotten the out, but A-Rod should have at least knocked the ball down and held the runners at the corners). Burnett did have a little trouble with two outs, but he threw a ton of first-pitch strikes and overall was great. I was nervous after the second inning, but he settled down and did his job. I love it when good AJ shows up, that guy is unhittable.
  • I’m glad it worked out, but I still say it was foolish to bring in Mo for six outs.
  • Does Girardi have a vendetta against Brett Gardner? Why not give him the start instead of Hairston? (I know it was because Hairston had better numbers against Pedro, but if I were Gardner I’d be salty) Gardner was the starting CF earlier in the season and now he never gets to play. He’s too speedy on the basepath to not have in the lineup…Either way, I’m just glad he got Swish-Dog outta there.
  • Pedro looked great at points; he had the Yanks swinging at crappy pitches. He’s just too old to go deep into games.
  • (At least) two more blown calls: the DP lineout that was(n’t) caught by Ryan Howard to end the 7th and the DP that Utley didn’t beat out to end the top of the 8th. If this isn’t a cry for instant replay, I don’t know what is. Baseball purists can go to hell: I’d rather the umps get the calls right than protect the, the, umm — whatever it is they’re trying to protect by keeping technological advances (that would make the game better much better) out of baseball. Eat shit Mr. Selig.
  • They didn’t really touch on the fact that Damon and Pedro were teammates on that ’04 Sox team. I guess it was because the whole Don Zimmer thing stole the spotlight, but you’d figure Joe Buck would milk that for all it’s worth. Then again the less said by Joe Buck the better.
  • Matsui was huge with that bomb, Tex crushed one over the fence in right-center and Posada added a pinch-hit RBI. However, A-Rod looked like the A-Rod of old…but that’s OK because I will never speak ill of him again. The team, though, does need to start hitting. They can’t always rely on the longball.

Andy (Can I) Pettitte against (Lump of) Cole Hamels in Game 3 on Halloween night in Philly. What a rivalry weekend: Yanks-Phils and Knicks-Sixers on Saturday, and then G-Men-Iggs on Sunday at 1 with Game 4 of Yanks-Phils that night. Wow. I really wish I didn’t live in Philadelphia.
