Should Luis Cessa Make the Yankees 25-Man Roster Out of Camp?

It appears the New York Yankees might have a major predicament on their hands.

23-year old right-hand pitcher Luis Cessa has been so good in spring training that he’s on the cusp of being named to the Yankees 25-man roster and pitching out of the bullpen according to Sweeny Murti of WFAN:

In five spring training appearances, including one start, Cessa has pitched to a 2.70 ERA with 10 strikeouts and two walks in 10.0 innings pitched. After tossing three scoreless innings against a major-league Tigers lineup on Monday, Luis Cessa received some praise from skipper Joe Girardi.

"“It’s good to see,” Girardi told Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News. “There are a few tough decisions we’re going to have to make. He’s [Cessa] in the running in some of those decisions. He’s pitched well here.”"

Now despite how well he’s pitched this spring, I’m hoping the Yankees elect to option Cessa back to the minor leagues and continue to develop him as a starter. Keep in mind that the Yankees went out and acquired Cessa from the Tigers in exchange for Justin Wilson in order to add starting pitching depth to their pipeline, and sometimes tampering with a prospects development will eventually hurt them in the long run.

Exhibit A, Joba Chamberlain, who was drafted by the Yankees and projected as a starting pitcher. The Yankees were so excited at the prospect of Chamberlains fastball that they fast-tracked him to the major leagues and debuted him out of the Yankees bullpen. When they tried to stretch him back out as a starter despite his success out of the ‘pen, Joba suffered a shoulder injury and never regained his form, causing him to never pan-out as a major league starter to date.

While Cessa has looked comfortable at times pitching out of the bullpen this spring and he’s currently stretched out to about 75 pitches, which equates to two-to-three innings out of a major league ‘pen, I still think it would be wise for the Yankees to continue developing him into a starter down in the minors.
