New York Yankees Editorial: Will Nathan Eovaldi Be Available to Pitch in Playoffs?

If the Yankees manage to win the American League Wild-Card game against their opponent who’s yet to be determined, their flame-throwing right hander Nathan Eovaldi might be ready to rejoin the team in the American League Divisional Series.

In the midst of last night’s rain-out in Baltimore, Eovaldi tossed a bullpen session at Camden Yards. It was the first time he pitched since September 5th when he was shut down with elbow inflammation in his pitching arm.

Though Eovaldi still leads the Yankees rotation with 14 wins, he won’t be stretched out in time to make an ALDS start. However, the Yankees can still utilize him as a power arm coming out of the bullpen, which is a tremendous asset when it comes to playoff baseball. A good example is the Kansas City Royals and the success they had with Brandon Finnegan last October.

"“Everything felt great, I threw 25 pitches, 18 fastballs and seven splits,’’ Eovaldi told George King III of the New York Post following his bullpen session."

According the King, the plan for the Yankees is to have Eovaldi rest up on Saturday, long toss on Sunday and throw another 35-pitch bullpen session on Monday in the Bronx. If all goes according to plan, the next step for Eovaldi would be live batting practice. If he can clear that hurdle, he’ll be set to return to the Yankees roster.

Staff writer Ricky Keeler broke down what his ALDS bullpen would look like earlier, but can you imagine adding Nathan Eovaldi and his 100 mph fastball to the trio of Justin Wilson, Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller?
