The New York Yankees honored Jorge Posada, and Luis Severino notched his first major league victory as the Yankees defeated the Cleveland Indians 6-2, Saturday afternoon.
After retiring No. 20 in a delightful pre-game ceremony with many dignitaries in attendance, the Bombers paid tribute to Jorge by playing the game Posada style, with Severino leading the way. Here is a recount of the top five highlights.
Severino allowed one run and just three hits in six innings. He showed that he can hang in there without his best control. He showed that he has the poise to be a major postseason contributor. He hoisted his fist in jubilation after completing an inning-ending strikeout, showing Posada-like emotion.
Brett Gardner lined a home run to put the Yankees on top for good in the bottom of the first. The shot screamed into the right field stands, just like so many of Posada’s did.
Brian McCann also homered in the first inning, to carry on the power tradition by Yankees catchers. Bill Dickey, Yogi Berra, Elston Howard, Thurman Munson and Posada, a tradition second to none.
Greg Bird hustled to the first-base stands to make a splendid catch. He showed no fear of injury, putting the team first, as Jorge always did.
Didi Gregorius handled a difficult hop at short. Seated on the infield, he completed a force play at second base. Whether he is hot at the plate or not, his effort is always there-another Posada trademark.
And what a special day it was for Jorge. Of course, along with his No. 20 being retired, he was honored in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium. His next stop should be enshrinement into the baseball Hall of Fame.
When asked on Yes Network about his contributions to the Yankees, once again Posada put the team before himself. ¨I am very proud that the legacy behind the plate continued with me,¨ he said.
With the win, the Yankees will remain in first place in the American League East regardless of Toronto’s outcome.
