Yankees Editorial: Rotation Depth About To Come To Surface

You can never have too much pitching. As soon as you think you do it is never enough. It will always regulate itself. For the New York Yankees, they are about to enter having a good problem to have territory with their starting rotation. They will have seven guys for five spots.

Chris Capuano pitched for AAA Scranton last night as he rehabs from his injury,  going 4.2 innings, giving up a run on four hits, while striking out four and giving up two walks. He was able to get through 72 pitches. Chase Whitley has pitched well since coming up and taking over Masahiro Tanaka‘s spot.

Tanaka himself has begun to throw in coming back from his injury. Ivan Nova is also starting to get back into the swing of things and may be about a month or two away from coming back after the Tommy John surgery from last year.

The Yankees could go to a six man rotation for a little while which could protect guys like Tanaka and Michael Pineda who have histories of arm issues.

Of course if you do that, it’s one less option for Joe Girardi to go to in the bullpen. Maybe they do it for a time or two through, but not permanently.

This all goes out the window if someone gets hurt, however, it’s good to see the Yankees having options to go to in the rotation. It’ll serve them well moving forward during this long season. Maybe it makes GM Brian Cashman look to upgrade the team in other areas instead as the season moves forward.

These things tend to work themselves out but for now, the Yankees just have to keep riding the wave and hope Capuano and Nova can come back and be healthy enough to help the team moving forward.
