Yankees Editorial: Just How Bad is the Yankees Defense?

So just how bad has the New York Yankees defense been through their first three series’ of the 2015 season?

Bad enough for their own general manger, the man who assembled them, to take to ESPN New York to voice his frustrations.

"“Our defensive mistakes have been shocking,” Cashman told Brian Wallace of ESPNNewYork.com on Thursday. “Our won-loss column has been affected by every aspect of the game. One night it’s the defense, the next night it’s the offense, then it’s the baserunning. It all depends on which game you’re looking at. We have not played consistent baseball at all, in any facet, and that’s why we’re 3-6.”"

To make matter worse, the Yankees defense leads the entire MLB with 11 errors and are tied for dead last with the Washington Nationals in Field Percentage (.971).

As Brian Cashman mentioned above, their abundance of defensive mistakes is indicative of their 3-6 record. Each mistake has attributed to the Yankees dropping their first three series of the season to three of their American League East Rivals; the Toronto Blue, Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles in that order.

The Yankees will begin a three game weekend set down in St. Petersburg Florida against the Tampa Bay Rays before moving on to a four game set against the 8-1 Detroit Tigers.

Though Cashman touched on other areas of the Yankees game that need improvement, their play in the field, or lack thereof, has been most alarming. Brian Cashman traded for Didi Gregorius and extended second baseman Stephen Drew and third baseman Chase Headley (all gold glove caliber defenders) in the offseason, in an attempt to prevent some runs on the defensive side of the ball and outweigh their weak offense and injury riddled pitching staff.

Unfortunately, the plan has backfired on the Yankees in the early running. Drew and Headley have committed two errors each, and Gregorius, who is known as a stellar defensive shortstop, has made an error of his own.

“Our defense has been overall poor, and we’re better than that,” Cashman said. “That’s not what we are or what we will be.”

After a much needed off day on Thursday, let’s hope the Yankees can get back on track, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
