Yankees Editorial: Brian Cashman’s Expectations Are Too High

The Yankees always have high expectations. That’s what multiple organizations dynasties do. That’s what an expensive stadium does. Throughout his tenure as GM, Brian Cashman has always made moves at the deadline to try and help push the Yankees over the top. Last year, Cashman got Chase Headley, Martin Prado and Brandon McCarthy without giving up a whole bunch to try and push the Yanks to the playoffs.

He’s acquired Kerry Wood, Lance Berkman, Jose Vizcaino, Jerry Hairston Jr, Eric Hinske and on and on the list goes to help tweak the roster to give additional depth to the put team over the top. He feels he can do the same thing this year according to the NY Post.

"“Playoffs and then beyond,’’ GM Brian Cashman told The Post. “Be a good enough team to get to the playoffs, allow me to tweak in-season to make it good enough to win a World Series.’’"

There is no other GM I want tweaking a team for a playoff run more than Cashman. The guy just knows what he’s doing in that situation.

However, I’m not sure this team is capable of getting to a point where Cashman can do his best job of tinkering.

Too many question marks in the rotation, along with Chris Capuano going down yesterday. CC Sabathia‘s knee and Masahiro Tanaka‘s elbow are ticking time bombs. Michael Pineda always has something.

The offense has too many questions whether it’s age or ability or Alex Rodriguez.

The farm system is getting ready to produce some ripe prospects and some contracts are getting to expire. The Yankees are in a bit of a no man’s land in that respect, even though they are in a wide open division where everyone has questions.

For a team to win a championship you do need some luck. Even for a team to be in contention into October. For Brian Cashman to do what does best, this team may have to get pretty lucky.
