YGY Radio Rewind: Winter Meetings Day 3

On this episode of the Yanks Go Yard Radio Show, brought to you by KNODA.com, I started off the show by talking about the news that happened late last night involving Jon Lester at the Winter Meetings in San Diego. The Chicago Cubs were able to sign him to a six-year, $155 million contract as Theo Epstein was able to lure Lester away from his old team, the Boston Red Sox. It is at least a good thing for the Yankees knowing they won’t have to see Lester in a Boston uniform. That being said, the episode wrapped up 30 minutes before Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports and MLB Network reported that the Los Angeles Dodgers are close to signing Brandon McCarthy to a four-year deal.

For this episode, my co-host was Yanks Go Yard and Friars On Base co-editor Billy Brost. Billy and I discussed the Lester signing, the decision by the Yankees to let David Robertson leave, and at the time, the need for McCarthy in the rotation. We also talked about the Yankees letting two homegrown players walk in the last two years and whether that sets a precedent for future homegrown Yankees’ players.

More from Yankees News

My first guest for the evening was Jason Ferrie, a writer for the Philadelphia regional site on Fansided called Section 215. Jason and I discussed the Phillies trading Jimmy Rollins to the Dodgers and trading Antonio Bastardo to the Pirates on Wednesday. Is it finally a relief to Phillies’ fans that Ruben Amaro Jr. is trading some of the veterans on the team to help for the future. Plus, does Jason think Cole Hamels will be in the rotation on opening day. I also asked Jason which Phillies’ infielder is most likely to be on the team come April: Chase Utley or Ryan Howard?

After my segment with Jason, Billy and I were joined by Friars On Base writer Devin Sparks to discuss the San Diego Padres. The center of the discussion started with the Padres’ interest in trading for Dodgers’ outfielder Matt Kemp. I asked Devin and Billy about the Padres’ three pitchers (Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, and Ian Kennedy) and their likelihood that all three would be in the 2015 rotation. Plus, how far away are the Padres from competing for a NL West title or NL Wild Card spot?
