The Yankees Could Lose Some Players In The Rule V Draft

The Rule V draft comes at the end of the Winter Meetings which are a little over a week away. In the major league portion of the draft, a player selected has to be kept on the major league roster all year for $50,000 or can be sold back to the team they got the player from for $25,000. The Yankees are in a position where they could lose a couple of players off their squad.

On the pitching side, it seemed like the choice was between Branden Pinder and Mark Montgomery and their choice was Pinder. Montgomery was talked about as a player who could come up and help the bullpen last season and even serve in a role that Dellin Betances eventually fell into in Spring Training. Montgmery got demoted and posted a 0.87 ERA in 17 games.

Matt Tracy could be picked up. He started in the minors, but he could end up as a LOOGY in a major league bullpen. He only struck out 89 in 151 innings and gave up 171 hits, but only walked 55 and if you can have a lefty who throws strikes coming out of the bullpen it could be an asset.

I’ve gone into detail about Kyle Roller in this space previously and even if his defense isn’t the best, power plays now and I feel like he will get picked up. The only other player I could see picked is Rob Segedin, because he can play third and the outfield on someone’s bench. He hit .283 in AA, but struggled when he got to AAA, only hitting .143.

I don’t think any of these guys will be the next Josh Hamilton or Johan Santana, but it doesn’t mean they can’t help a major league club in 2015.
