Yankees Rumors: Bombers Now In The Mix For Yasmany Tomas?

Yasmany Tomas, the large Cuban slugger who is currently a free agent, has several suitors. According to a story by writer Jorge Arangure, Jr., you can add the New York Yankees to that list. While the Bombers were near the bottom of the American League in offense the past two seasons, I just don’t see New York being willing to add yet another albatross-type contract to the books–especially for an unproven talent.

As of right now, the two primary teams interested in signing Tomas, are the Philadelphia Phillies, who have attempted a massive salary dump to free up enough cash to give Tomas his desired $100 million deal, and the San Diego Padres, whose new GM, A.J. Preller, has a long and established history of scouting and signing elite international talent while he was with the Texas Rangers. Sure, an impact bat would be great for the Yankees, but they have more pressing issues than the luxury of another outfield bat. Even though Tomas is also listed as a third baseman, believe me now when I say he will NEVER start a big league game at the hot corner.

Reports have Tomas hitting 450-foot opposite field home runs during his work outs in the Dominican Republic. The Yankees have been one of many teams who have watched the big man swing the bat. It just doesn’t make sense at this point. The Yankees haven’t delved into big time Cuban talent since the Jose Contreras/Orlando Hernandez days, and yet despite signing some quality international talent his past summer, none of them were of the caliber of Yasmany Tomas. If he was a shortstop, a second baseman, or a big time power arm for the rotation, that would be another story. Unfortunately, it’s the wrong time and the wrong place for Yasmany Tomas and the New York Yankees to be a suitable fit.
