No Yankees Nominated For Gold Gloves This Year and Shouldn’t Have Been

The American League Gold Glove nominees came out yesterday and the Yankees had a grand total of….zero nominees. Zilch. Nada. Zippo. You know what? Looking at the team, it’s not so shocking they didn’t.

Brian McCann is really good at pitch framing. He’s not bad at throwing baserunners out. But what you put him with the likes of Salvador Perez at fielding his position? Probably not.

Mark Teixeira probably didn’t play enough and frankly wasn’t that good as he’s been in the past at the position. And don’t make the Rafael Palmeiro argument. We all know it was ridiculous he got the gold glove that year.

The Yankees had no real starting second or third baseman that was on a consistent basis. If Chase Headley stays and plays a full year of games at the position, he certainly could.

Derek Jeter and Gold Glove are two words that didn’t mix this year.

Carlos Beltran was hurt most of the year.

That leaves us with Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury. Watching Ellsbury for the first time day in and day out, you got to appreciate the kind of player and fielder he is. But in center, Lorenzo Cain didn’t even get nominated and Cain may be a better fielder.

In left, I can’t say that Gardner is better than Alex Gordon, Yoenis Cespedes or Michael Brantley.

No Yankees are up for a Gold Glove and that’s okay. But two former Yankees, Russell Martin and Robinson Cano are.
