Yankees Free Agent Keep Or Dump: Stephen Drew

facebooktwitterreddit

We continue our Free Agent Keep or Dump series, as a part of our year in review series, continues with a look at a player, who if re-signed, will be starting in place of a legend. You probably know where I’m going with this.

Stephen Drew was brought in at the trade deadline in exchange for Kelly Johnson. Johnson and Brian Roberts didn’t produce in playing second base for the Yankees so they decided to acquire Drew and have him play over there.

The 31 year old didn’t exactly make Roberts and Johnson look like Robinson Cano with the stick. Here are his final stats with the Yankees:

.150/.219/.271 with three homers and 15 RBI

Drew, in 2013, put up some pretty respectable numbers for the Boston Red Sox in 2013, hitting .253 with 13 homers and 67 RBI in 124 games. It was very possible, that not signing until May 21 because of the draft pick compensation attached to him effected his play in 2014.

Drew is also a pretty good defender at a position where you need good defense.

However, the offensive questions with Drew plus the fact that he’s played in 100 or more games only once since 2011 makes me question whether or not he would be the best guy to basically replace Derek Jeter at shortstop.

No one can actually replace who Jeter was and what Jeter meant to the team and the organization. For a team looking at offensive punch, I don’t think Drew is the right guy.

Final Verdict: Dump
