The core four era is officially over. Today was it’s swan song after Brian McCann ran for Derek Jeter in the third inning after driving in Ichiro Suzuki with an infield single. The Yankees beat the Red Sox 9-5.

The Yankees got four off Clay Buchholz in the third. Ichiro drove in two with a triple into the triangle in centerfield. Then came Jeter’s last AB. Brett Gardner doubles and then Mark Teixeira‘s sac fly made it 4-0.

The Yankees then dropped a five spot in the seventh. Francisco Cervelli and Chris YJung singled and were driven in by Jose Pirela‘s double. After a single by Eury Perez, John Ryan Murphy drove in a run with a single. Austin Romine and Chase Headley each followed with RBI hits.

In the bottom half, Dan Butler drove in three runs with a double and Mookie Betts drove in two more with a double of his own to conclude the scoring.

The Yankees finish in second place in the AL East with a 84-78 record.
