Tanaka Rocked As Yankees Blown Out In Fenway

ByJason Evans|

Maybe it was just rust as he’s still in Spring Training mode. Maybe he’s injured again. Whatever the reason, the last start of 2014 for Masahiro Tanaka left more questions than answers today as the Red Sox got him for seven runs in the first two innings as the Red Sox beat the Yankees 10-4 in the penultimate game of the year.

Yoenis Cespedes drew first blood in the bottom of the first driving in Mookie Betts with an RBI single. Then came the hay-makers in the second.

Rusney Castillo walked, stole second and went to third on a groundout. Christian Vasquez singled him in to make it 2-0. Then the inning went like this: walk, single, single plus Chase Headley error, single. That would be it for Tanaka. Preston Claiborne came in. Then came Eury Perez‘s error, double, single, single, walk before Betts would ground out to end the frame.

Daniel Nava would drive another run in thanks to another error by Perez.

In the seventh, Jose Pirela tripled and Brendan Ryan drove him in with a sac fly to put the Yanks on the board.

In the eighth, singles by Francisco Cervelli, Austin Romine and Headley loaded the bases. Chris Young drove in a run with a single of his own and Stephen Drew then hit a ground-rule double to conclude the scoring.

Tomorrow’s season finale is at 1:35. Michael Pineda will face Clay Buchholz. Derek Jeter was hit for in the fifth inning and as of this post, there is no word as to whether or not he will play tomorrow.
