Yankees Come Back As Young Blasts Walk-Off Homer

The night began as most of them do… the Yankees weren’t hitting and trailed the Tampa Bay Rays  by four runs.

Rays starter Alex Cobb had a no-hitter through seven and a third innings. In fact, the only base runners the Yankees were able to string together came in the third when Rays’ center fielder Kevin Kiermaier dropped Stephen Drew‘s fly ball and in the seventh when Cobb walked Brian McCann and Mark Teixeira.

In the mean time, Yunel Escobar sparked the Rays offense with a three-run home run in the fourth inning and a solo shot to lead off the seventh.

Michael Pineda pitched a solid game aside from Escobar’s homers. He pitched seven and a third innings while giving up ten hits, four runs, and striking out two Rays.

After retiring Drew to start the eighth, Chris Young took an 0-1 Cobb offering into right center field and ended up on second base with the Yankees first hit of the game.

Rays Manager Joe Maddon then replaced Cobb with the hard throwing Brad Boxberger. Joe Girardi countered by sending Martin Prado to pinch hit for light hitting Brendan Ryan.

After falling behind 0-2, Prado worked a full count and then turned on a change up, sending it into the left field seats to cut the Rays lead to 4-2.

In the ninth inning, Rays closer Jake McGee hit third baseman Chase Headley in the face with a 96 MPH fastball. He remained conscious and will undergo X-Rays.

Ichiro followed with a double to right-center field to put the tying run on second base. However, McGee fought back to strike out Zelous Wheeler.

Chris Young then came to the plate looking for a fastball and launched the second one he saw into the left field seats to give the Yankees a much needed win.

The Yankees play the Orioles in a day-night double header tomorrow. Game one begins at 1pm EST with game two at 7pm.
