On a day when the Tigers already lost and a day when the Yankees were to face tough lefty Danny Duffy after being shutout by James Shields last night, the Yanks could use a break or two. Duffy lasted just one pitch and exited with shoulder soreness and the Yankees took advantage and beat the Royals 6-2.

Liam Hendriks came in for the Royals and with two out, Martin Prado doubled in his return from some hamstring issues. Mark Teixeira brought him in with a single.

The Royals tied it in the third off Brandon McCarthy. Mike Moustakas and Omar Infante singled. Alex Gordon then singled to drive in Moustakas, but Jacoby Ellsbury threw out Infante at third to end the inning.

The Yanks came right back in the bottom half. John Ryan Murphy doubled and scored on Ellsbury’s triple. Derek Jeter would then drive in Ellsbury with a sac fly.

In the fourth, Chase Headley and Murphy singled. Salvador Perez tried to catch Headley napping and instead threw the ball away to allow the run to score.

Casey Coleman came in in the fifth and the Yankees tacked on to their lead. Prado and Carlos Beltran doubled. Headley walked and Ichiro Suzuki hit for Zelous Wheeler and drove in Beltran with a single.

Moustakas would drive in a run with a sac fly in the seventh for their last run.

We will have Derek Jeter day covered tomorrow, along with an important game tomorrow afternoon. The ceremony starts at noon with first pitch of the game at 1:35. A pair of rookie right-handers square off in Shane Greene and Yordano Ventura.
