Derek Jeter as the owner of a Major League Baseball team? That scenario could be a very real possibility. The Yankees’ Captain told the YES Network’s Jack Curry not only that he’d like to own a Major League Baseball team someday, but that he’d like to run it like George Steinbrenner. It’s no secret that Jeter and the Boss had a very close relationship, and it would be all too fitting to see Derek Jeter take the same profession one day.

But just how serious is he about actually running a team? Apparently Jeter is so serious, he once told former Yankees general manger Gene “Stick” Michael all about it, Curry said. Jeter said Curry was right. “I would like to,” Jeter said. “I take that as a compliment from Stick. I would like that. I thought (Steinbrenner), in my opinion — I’m a little biased obviously — but I think he was the best owner in all of sports. I think a lot of owners have learned a great deal from him, myself included.” Jeter said he wants to “call the shots.” “That’s the next ultimate goal, to be an owner. I would love to call the shots. I think I’ve learned a lot in my career, not only what goes on the field but I learned a lot from our late owner in how to run organization.  I have a lot of things to learn but I would like to do that.”

I don’t think there’s anyone in the world who would doubt Derek Jeter’s ability to apply his 20 years of knowledge and experience into successfully running a team. The only question is, will this happen? We’ll just have to wait and see…
