When you’re team isn’t having a good day offensively, sometimes it takes a guy who you don’t expect to make a contribution with the stick, to get the job done. Chris Stewart has overall done a good job for the New York Yankees since Francisco Cervelli went down. Stewart’s clutch single in the top of the ninth won the game for New York Yankees this afternoon, as the beat the Seattle Mariners 2-1.

The pitching matchup of David Phelps against Felix Hernandez looked like a mismatch on paper, however, Phelps held his own against the Mariners’ ace. The Yankees struck first in the top of the second. Jayson Nix singled and stole second. After a strikeout, Stewart reached on a bunt single. Brett Gardner, who had a fantastic series, singled in Nix.

The Mariners tied in the bottom half of the inning. After a groundout, Kelly Shoppach doubled. He went to third on Michael Saunders‘ groundout. After a walk, Brendan Ryan reached on an infield hit which scored a run.

The Yankees won it in the ninth. Ichiro Suzuki led off the inning with a walk off Oliver Perez. Nix bunted him to second. After a flyout, Stewart delivered the game winning hit.
