Best of John & Suzyn: Spring Training

Love ’em or hate ’em, you can’t deny that John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman have some great moments in the Lowe’s Broadcast Booth. Who can forget gems like “the Yankees are doing just about everything wrong – that’s why they’re having so much trouble winning games,” “the 1 and 2 is up and in so the count is 2 and 1,” and of course, “you know, Suzyn, I don’t see much difference between home and away in baseball; but thanks for telling me it’s August.”

Now that I think about it, some enterprising late-night infomercial producer could put together an 8-CD box set of John and Suzyn’s Greatest Hits and I would

probably

absolutely buy it.

Though we didn’t get many WCBS broadcasts this spring, we did get treated to some show tunes and botched home run calls. Clearly J & S conditioned themselves well this winter because they are in midseason form already. Here are some of the best Spring Training lines to lead us into Opening Day:

“It is high, it is far, it is….. caught. Oh, nope. It’s gone.” – Sterling on A-Rod’s home run, 3/4 vs. Phillies

“Tonight is a slightly more important exhibition game. But it’s not important at all.” – Sterling with an exciting teaser, 3/12 vs. Red Sox

“Here’s something that will make you smile and warm the very cockles of your heart: Suzyn and I are both wearing blue and white today. And we didn’t plan it.” – Sterling, 3/25 vs. Tigers

“I bought a lottery ticket once, when the Hawks were somewhere. Everybody’s gotta be somewhere.” – Sterling pondering the Mega Millions jackpot, 3/30 vs. Phillies
