BREAKING NEWS: Vazquez has solid outing!

Despite the fact that the Yanks lost 2-0 to the Tigers in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday, you can’t blame this setback on Javier Vazquez.

Home Run Javy pitched very well (giving up 2ER, 5H, 7K, 2BB on 97 pitches, 66 for strikes in 7 innings) and lowered his ERA to 8.10. Even the runs he gave up were on seeing-eye singles, you can’t get mad at him for that. Overall, I say, great outing from Javy; I’ll take that start any day from him. You have to feel bad for him, though, pitching like that and getting a loss. That has to mess with the morale.

What do you think, Girardi:

"Javy pitched a good game, unfortunately we didn’t score runs. I was very happy with Javy today…He gave us every opportunity to win, we just didn’t score runs. I thought he commanded his pitches better. Even the innings where he gave up runs, he got ground balls…He sure looked good today, any time you can go 7 innings and give up 2 runs you have a good chance of winning…I think it is a step forward, we’ll try to build on this. As I said before, any time you can go 7 innings and give up 2 runs, I’ll take my chances."

How about you Javy? What do you have to say about it:

"I was agreessive and threw strikes…I still got to keep working, step by step, and keep working hard…I felt much better than the other games, I guess the pace was better, I was throwing strikes and being aggressive…I needed (a good start), everybody knows I needed a good game…hopefully little by little I can make a difference."

As Joe and Javy mentioned earlier, the offense was as dormant as can be. Yankee hitters went 0-for-6 with RISP and left seven men on base; most appalling of all had to be Ramiro Pena. He came to bat with two outs in the second inning, right after Randy Winn had walked on four pitches to load the bases, and was retired on three pitches. WTF. Then again in the fourth he was up with two outs and men on first and second, guess what happened. Yep, he was retired on three GD pitches…again.

It wasn’t just the backup infielder that was shitting the bed, the team finagled just four hits. Jeter was especially annoying, hacking away at first pitches and not working counts. His OBP is at .315 and his average is .277. Surprising for someone who is in a contract year.

Take it straight from the horse’s (Jeter) mouth:

"That’s how the game goes some times, you take the good with the bad…Basically forget about it, it’s not the first time. We have another game in two hours."

Oh well, hopefully Hughes will make us all forget about this three-game slide in the nightcap. Here is the lineup for Game 2:

  5. Robbie Cano 2B
  6. Swish Dog RF

On the bump will be Philip Joseph Hughes going against Jeremy Bonderman. LET’S GO YANKS!!!

On a lighter note: Happy birthday Yogi Berra!!!!! He is 85 years young today.

Also, Joe West must be as happy as a pig in shit, as the time of game was 2:15. I can’t remember a quicker Yankee game.
