Yankees: Luke Voit’s Instagram About 2020 Return Will Send You Through a Wall

Of course Luke Voit went above and beyond in his message about a 2020 return.

Since Rob Manfred moved his “unequivocal” start to the 2020 season back a few pegs, the league’s stars (and the Yankees) have absolutely been united in message.

Tell them when and where, they say. When and where. When and where. By the end of this tactless process, those words will be burned on all baseball fans’ retinas. Players want to play. They’re making that very clear.

Well, of COURSE Luke Voit, the burly baseball bruiser, was one of only a handful of players to go above and beyond in their messaging. “When and where, sure sure sure, yeah yeah yeah, but how would *I* say that?” Voit clearly thought.

Then, he pressed “send” on an IG post that serves as an excellent distillation of his entire being.

A Getty image and an inexplicable SNL reference from 1997 — it truly does not get better than that. “When and where” is refreshing, yet robotic. “Let’s go and play some got damn ball” is what I really want to see from the league’s good ol’ country boys.

Strike-throwing wizards like Gerrit Cole, and literal machines like DJ LeMahieu, aren’t likely to freelance like this. Cole went with the boilerplate message, as did Mike Trout.

And that’s fine! For them. But in true “Let the Kids Play” fashion, I’d love to see more from the players who routinely give extra on the field. Voit’s message here is real. It’s exactly what I’d expect to hear him bellowing as he rounds first, hopping Sosa-style into the air while he tries to decide if he’s hit a double or a short-porch bomb.

Baseball isn’t truly back until the players feel real again, and of course the game will never come back without their participation in full. Like Voit, we’re all just ready to play some got damn ball, as long as Rob Manfred doesn’t drop said ball entirely.
