Governor Andrew Cuomo announced something Sunday that paves the way for New York sports teams top return to the state.

While the New York Yankees’ training for any form of 2020 season will likely take place in the state of Florida, per last week’s rumors, the state passed a major hurdle in terms of safety precautions on Sunday.

Now, it’s time for MLB to respond in kind to the NBA and NHL’s recent peacemaking, in an effort to seal the deal.

Though Governor Cuomo’s words ring a bit hollow until major sports leagues officially resolve their issues and announce details of their comebacks, he did announce in his daily briefing that New York sports teams are free to resume training camps in their respective facilities.

Now that they’re able to, we’re still left wondering which teams will do so in the not-so-distant future.

New York’s sports teams can now train in New York…but which ones will return first?

While the NFL seems to be the league that’s remained the most steadfastly “full steam ahead” while letting the coronavirus pandemic whittle away the intervening months before their various report dates, the Buffalo Bills are the only squad actually based in the state of New York. Theoretically, they can return to camp on time, without further complications.

The Knicks, Nets, Rangers, and Islanders all belong to leagues that are pursuing isolated bubbles for future 2020 competition, and it seems unlikely that any of those teams would return to New York before flying to Orlando or any other sanctuary city for their seasons’ resumption.

That leaves the Yankees and Mets, who intend to train in Florida in the month of June, if baseball is able to hammer out a deal, before playing at their home stadiums in the month of July, or later. This now seems fully possible, echoing Cuomo’s words from earlier in the week about the state’s phases of reopening, and his facilitating of such activities.

New York’s professional sports teams, including our Yankees, can now feel safe again within the state’s borders.

Now, the onus is on the leagues to further build upon this recovery milestone by agreeing to proper boundaries.
