Why?

First, the Yankees can save themselves some money if they successfully extend Torres now. Savings can be used to re-sign other players. Over the next few years, the market will continue to be set before Torres hits free agency.

Recent Extensions:

See below for recent extensions signed by other infielders, their age at the time of the extension and their career WAR prior to signing the extension:

  • Manny Machado (26): 10 Years, $300 Million, 33.9 WAR in 926 Games
  • Nolan Arenado (27): 8 Years, $260 Million, 21.5 WAR in 876 Games
  • Jose Altuve (27): 5 Years, $151 Million, 29.6 WAR in 982 Games
  • Xander Bogarts (26): 6 Years, $120 Million, 14.7 WAR in 759 Games
  • Alex Bregman (24): 6 Years, $100 Million, 12.5 WAR in 361 Games
  • Elvis Andrus (24): 8 Years, $120 Million, 13.0 WAR in 601 Games
  • Jean Segura (27): 5 Years, $70 Million, 10.7 WAR in 632 Games
  • Kyle Seager (27): 7 Years, $100 Million, 13.4 WAR in 527 Games

Torres (22) has 6.9 WAR in just 266 Games. Nothing’s a given but I believe he’ll, at least, almost double that over the next two years.

Upcoming Market Resets:

Other infielders with a great deal of success will become free agents within the next few years and will continue to reset the market. See below for some of these players, their age and how much team control they have remaining:

  • Anthony Rendon (29): Under TC through 2019
  • Didi Gregorius (29): Under TC through 2019
  • Andrelton Simmons (30): Under TC through 2020
  • DJ LeMahieu (31): Under TC through 2020
  • Francisco Lindor (25): Under TC through 2021
  • Trevor Story (26): Under TC through 2021
  • Kris Bryant (27): Under TC through 2021
  • Javier Báez (26): Under TC through 2021
  • Marcus Semien (29): Under TC through 2021
  • Carlos Correa (25): Under TC through 2021
  • Corey Seager (25): Under TC through 2021
  • Trea Turner (26): Under TC through 2022
  • Matt Chapman (26): Under TC through 2023

Again, if the market has already been set for $30-$33 million annually, what will it look like in a few years once Correa, Seager, Lindor, Story, Báez, and Bryant have all signed new deals?
