PHOENIX, ARIZONA – APRIL 30: Pitcher CC Sabathia #52 of the New York Yankees waves to the crowd after recording his 3,000th career strike out against John Ryan Murphy (not pictured) of the Arizona Diamondbacks during second inning of the MLB game at Chase Field on April 30, 2019 in Phoenix, Arizona. 3000th career strikeout

Entering his final season CC was only 14 strikeouts shy of 3000 for his career and has admitted that’s one of the main reasons why he decided to come back for one last hurrah. An early-season IL stint held off the inevitable until April 30th against the Diamondbacks and one of his former battery mates John Ryan Murphy. In front of his family and friends, CC put away Murphy with an 84 mph changeup to cement his spot in Cooperstown someday.

Number 3000 came over 18 years after he recorded his first career punch out on April 8th against Mike Kinkade in his major league debut for the Indians. It also made CC only the third left-hander and the third black pitcher to accomplish such a feat. Since then CC’s passed HOF John Smoltz for 16th on the all-time K list and on June 19th, he added to his resume with career win #250 which should only increase his chances at making the HOF on the first ballot.

Along the way to get to 3000 CC had three 200 strikeout seasons and three separate seasons with exactly 197 K’s. This season his total is now at 107 which gives him 3093 for his career, but he’ll have a chance to add on to that as he’s planned to make another appearance out of the bullpen during these last four games.
