#4. Mark Reynolds, Corner Infielder

This isn’t the time to think “What was once old is new again.” Reynolds was offered a minor league deal to return to the Bronx last season, and instead chose to go to Milwaukee to compete with former Yankee Lyle Overbay for a roster spot. It worked out well for both, as they helped the Brewers to the cusp of a playoff spot, only to fall short.

I argued loud and long to bring Reynolds back last season, but that was then, this is now. Reynolds got his power numbers (22 home runs, 45 runs batted in), but the batting average dipped below .200 for the second time in his career (.196). Here’s the disturbing stat: in 433 at-bats, Reynolds struck out 122 times. Project that out to 600 at-bats, and you’re talking close to 200 Ks in a season. With his ability to play solid defense at both third and first, what price are the Yankees willing to pay for that many swing and misses?

The Yankees have their first and third combo in Mark Teixeira and if they resign Chase Headley. Mix in A-Rod, who will get a long look at first base this spring as well, and both the at-bats, and ability to keep all three players fresh are there. Reynolds has no place on this roster any further, and while the right-handed power is always welcome, not for the negatives he also brings with the bat.
