After a month and a half into the baseball season, it has become obvious that the Yankees are good. Very good. Even the most optimistic fan would not have predicted a scorching 27-16 record without both Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira. How are the Yankees playing so well? The secret is pitching. Throughout May, the team has allowed double-digit runs in only one game, and that occurred when Phil Hughes gave up seven earned runs in the first inning. Fortunately, the great pitching has compensated for a less than stellar hitting performance.

May 1, 2013; Bronx, NY, USA; New York Yankees relief pitcher Mariano Rivera (42) and catcher Chris Stewart (19) celebrate the win against the Houston Astros at Yankee Stadium. Yankees won 5-4. Mandatory Credit: Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports

In fact, the Yankees are barely scoring runs. Only against the Royals on May 10th have the Yankees scored at least eight runs in a contest during this month, and only two other times did the Bronx Bombers scored at least 6 runs. A majority of the wins in May have been decided by two runs or less, and all were in low scoring matchups. Of course, the Yankees don’t need to score 10 runs a game to win, but seeing a team that was so potent offensively last year (804 runs and 245 home runs in 2012) struggle is somewhat peculiar. While injuries definitely contribute to the dearth of runs, it seems that a rough pitching start could easily turn into a rough night for the whole team. The bottom line is that in May, the Yankees own a collective batting average of .237. That number must rise at least 20 points if the Yankees wish to remain atop the podium in a competitive AL East division.

Now let’s talk about the good stuff, shall we? As mentioned above, the Yankees have pitched outstandingly. The triumphant trio of C.C. Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda, and Andy Pettitte has been terrific, compiling a 14-8 record each with ERAs under 4.00, even though Pettitte is DL-bound. The bullpen has been equally as brilliant, with Mariano Rivera converting all 16 save opportunities he has received. David Robertson has been dominant as the eighth inning man for the squad with a miniscule .177 batting average against and a 0.87 WHIP. Relievers Shawn Kelley, Preston Claiborne and Boone Logan have been a boon for the Yankees. Kelley’s high earned run average is deceiving, as his underlying statistics imply bad luck on the mound and not horrible pitching.

In addition to pitching well, the Yankees are fielding well too. Robinson Cano is fielding .994, and Lyle Overbay is doing his best Mark Teixeira impression with a .993 fielding percentage. Jayson Nix has played a satisfactory third base also, and even at the age of 39, Ichiro Suzuki has shown plenty of life on his throws with four outfield assists. The key to winning games is to prevent errors and minimize mistakes. The Yankees’ glovework has been very strong so far, and should continue to remain a strength going forward.

Overall, the Yankees have been solid in May. Andy Pettitte‘s injury does not help matters, but the starting rotation and the bullpen are strong enough to overcome his loss, for now. The batting has been mediocre, but it has been good enough to propel the Yankees this month. The fielding is fine, and possibly most important of all, the morale is high. A decent team with great chemistry will perform better than a great team with poor chemistry. Considering that the Yankees were only 21-18 at this point last year, the Yankees are in a very comfortable position for the beginning of summer.

Many prominent players are scheduled to return within the next two months. In no particular order, here is the Yankees’ current disabled list, and what could be expected upon their returns.

Curtis Granderson- It has been roughly two months since Granderson was hit in the forearm by a J.A. Happ pitch during a preseason game. His broken forearm seems to be recovering, as he has been taking at-bats in extended Spring Training games with apparently no setbacks. Once Granderson completes a few rehab games, he should recapture the role of the everyday centerfielder, with Brett Gardner moving to left field and Vernon Wells either platooning at one of the corner outfield slots or sharing time as a designated hitter with Travis Hafner. Granderson will most likely maintain his fine fielding skills as his legs were unharmed. His hitting remains a mystery, but hopefully his injury will cause no further problems with his swing. He should be back within the month of May.

Mark Teixeira- Tex is returning from a torn tendon in his right wrist. He has been taking swings, which is a great sign. However, wrist injuries are pesky, and it may take some time for bat speed to completely return. Fortunately, Lyle Overbay has been performing well in his stead, so it would be frivolous to rush Teixiera back into action. Tex may be sidelined until the All-Star break; The Yankees and fans alike should be prepared to live a little longer without the switch-hitter.

Oct 13, 2012; Bronx, NY, USA; New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter (middle) is helped off the field by manager Joe Girardi (in blue) after an injury in the 12th inning against the Detroit Tigers during game one of the 2012 ALCS at Yankee Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports

Derek Jeter- The Yankees’ captain and leader, Derek Jeter has not been much more than a fan thus far into the season. Jeter has been dealing with a broken ankle suffered during a defeat to the Detroit Tigers in last year’s playoffs. That same surgically repaired ankle is still cracked, casting a dark shadow over his season. He has already ruled out a return for the All-Star break, and at this point, Jeter will be lucky if he returns to his usual self before August. The shortstop position will be manned by Eduardo Nunez for now, and probably will be manned by him until the summer unless a drastic recovery is made soon by Jeter.

Kevin Youkilis- After being placed on the disabled list for a lumbar spine strain, Youkilis is reportedly felling better. He has received a few epidural shots to relieve pain, but has not seemed to complete much rehabbing yet. Youkilis should return during May and regain his third base slot, pushing Jayson Nix back into his usual utilityman role. At least Nix should back up Nunez at shortstop in case anything serious happens.

Joba Chamberlain- Joba has been dealing with a right oblique strain. While he might be back in mid-May, it is unlikely. Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto has the same injury and he was scratched from a rehab start for which he was presumably healthy for. Obviously Chamberlain is a completely different pitcher, but Joba has an injury history, and a fairly extensive history considering he is only 27 years of age. Chamberlain and Cueto also have the same initials, so take from that what you wish. Joba should take the necessary time to heal; he wasn’t pitching all that well when he was healthy anyway, and the harsh reality is that the Yankees don’t need him at the moment.

Ivan Nova- He has been rehabbing for triceps inflammation. He should be reinserted back into the rotation in the next few weeks.

Both Francisco Cervelli and Alex Rodriguez are a while away from returning. Cervelli had a successful surgery on May 1, and A-Rod is scheduled to begin baseball activities soon. And finally…

Michael Pineda! While he hasn’t played since 2011 because of shoulder surgery, he still possesses the potential, and the ability, to become a solid starter for the Yankees later in the year. Pineda has always been reminiscent of a young, right-handed C.C. Sabathia with his size and pitching velocity. If Pineda can throw at least into the mid 90′s with decent control of his pitches on the mound, the Yankees’ rotation would be a sight to see.

Imagine a rotation with Sabathia, Pineda, Hiroki Kuroda, Andy Pettitte, and Phil Hughes! It would seem to be a dominant one barring any other injuries. If Pineda recovers, along with Granderson, Teixiera, Jeter, and others, the Yankees would be in a prime position to make a run for the AL East title.

However, this experienced crew of hurlers has been pitching solid ball recently. Sabathia, Kuroda, and Pettitte all have ERA’s under 4.00, with WHIP’s all under 1.32. There is not much reason to worry much about a drop in performance either. (more…)

On Thursday, July 19th, the New York Yankees began a series against the Athletics at Oakland. They lost that game, got swept in the series, and from that day until August 7th, won only 6 out of 18 games. Of course, because they are the Yankees, many fans panicked. They criticized the Yankees for performing badly in the clutch and blowing leads and Brian Cashman for failing to make bigger moves at the trade deadline. On August 8th, even Cashman himself admitted that the Yankees were “playing poor baseball”. (more…)

Well, if this week vs. the Texas Rangers was supposed to be a postseason preview for the New York Yankees, then the Bronx Bombers passed the test. Although they got disappointing pitching from Ivan Nova and the Yankees’ bullpen on Thursday, they were still able to win three of four from the Rangers. The reasons for that were because of their starting pitching, Derek Lowe, and opportune hitting from guys such as Nick Swisher. Now, with a little over six weeks to go, it’s time for the Yankees to pass another test and the next exam comes with a little twist of revenge.
