Now that the New York Yankees are thirty games into the 2013 season, let’s take a breath and choose our first “Player Of The Month!” Of course, it is not a calendar month, but it is 30 games. The presented statistics are taken from the games prior to May, 7. Two pitchers and two non-pitchers are selected as finalists. Now that we are over one month into the season, it’s fair to say that the Yankees have held their own. Despite the prognostications in the off-season with the losses of players like Russell Martin and Nick Swisher, and the increasing number of Yankees on the disabled list- Kevin Youkilis, Joba Chamberlain, Francisco Cervelli, not to mention an aching David Robertson- the Yankees have far exceeded expectations, and it has been a pleasant surprise. Another great surprise? The resurgence of Travis Hafner.

One of the more talked about moves this offseason is the Yankees’ decision to sign Travis Hafner. While Hafner was at one point a perennial MVP candidate, injuries have derailed his career and he is no longer the player that he once was. Opening Day At The New Yankee Stadium – PREDICTIONS!

Prediction #1: There will be a lot of people in the stadium, of which some will be inebriated, of which some will defile the new stadium with vomit. Grandmothers across the world that still have the plastic covers on their furniture will feel the echoing pain universally.

Prediction #2: There will be many exclamations and profanities uttered and/or yelled in regards to the price of food and drink, which normally wouldn’t be anything out of the ordinary, but it’s so bad that many a rich people will think of how they can sneak in food the next time they come to the stadium like us ghetto folk. Tip: Say you’re on a special medical diet and you can’t eat the park food… it works.

Prediction #3: When Yogi Berra goes to throw the ceremonial first pitch, many people in the crowd, watching on television or though their computers, and listening to the ceremony will sadistically and secretly hope that Yogi falls down on his follow through. Why? Because old people falling over is comedy gold.

The Futility List: Bottom To Top – Ranking Week 1

The Futility List is all about that… futility. Sure, many another website will give you a nice and clean MLB team power rankings, listing the league from top to bottom, but I say those teams at the end need love too. So, we’ll start our list at the bottom! It’s not all about the breast… err, best team, you know!

Let’s put the face down and the bottoms up… wait, I’m mixing metaphors again… and let’s get to the first edition of THE FUTILITY LIST!

1. Washington Nationals (0-6)- If baseball were a bar, the Nats would be the guy in the corner with a drink in hand, standing alone, and sweating. Profusely.

2. New York Yankees (3-3) – Going .500 combined against the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals, two teams not expected to do much this season except watch the “real” franchises above them, is not a good way to get out of the gate. So with the expectation factor in mind, this ranking is about as right as two ugly lesbians being a couple.

2009 MLB Season Predictions – Who Will Win?

The season starts tonight when the Atlanta Braves visit NL East rival and defending World Series champions, from the City of Brotherly Love, the Philadelphia Phillies. Looking at last year before the season, some people didn’t think the Phils would win their division, let alone the ultimate MLB prize, a championship ring. People just get it wrong sometimes. However, the exercise of predictions is always a fun one to partake in, particularly for a writer that loves baseball. So, that said, below are my prognostications for the upcoming 2009 season with some brief comments for each division results. After choosing the World Series champs, I’ll predict the individual awards as well. Agree or disagree, leave a comment!
