The New York Yankees, who once saw their lead at ten games in late July, now stand just two games ahead of the Baltimore Orioles after losing two of three to the O’s at Yankee Stadium this weekend. The rosters did expand on Saturday, but New York is still missing some of their key pieces and with manager Joe Girardi shuffling starters around in the rotation, you can see the urgency starting to kick in. Now, the Yankees begin a stretch of 26 games in which they will play 17 of them on the road.

The trend lately is that the Tampa Bay Rays (63-52) have always found their way into the playoffs or have been at least threatening to get in. Will the same be true for this season? The New York Yankees (68-47) had a comfortable lead over the Rays and Baltimore Orioles, but now that lead has slipped by a few games. The Rays are currently on a seven-game winning streak and they certainly seem to be making the most of it with the Yankees’ inconsistent play since mid-July. The Rays are a team that primarily focuses on their pitching and with David Price (15-4, 2.50 ERA) leading the way, it may be a rough road ahead for the Yankees who play the Rays six more times before the regular season ends. (more…)

So clearly, it’s been noted that the New York Yankees have had somewhat of an unusual trend of losing games lately. Since the All-Star break, the Yankees have gone 11-11 and their streak of dominance in the MLB has been currently won over by the Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds who now both hold better records than the Bombers. Even the Baltimore Orioles who sit 5.5 games out of first in the AL East are going nowhere but up, especially with the Tampa Bay Rays on their tail. Out of those 11 wins, six of them came from the softer teams in the AL such as the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays. When the Yankees have faced contending teams as of late, such as the Oakland A’s, the Yanks seem to falter a bit. Currently, they’re locked in a four-game series with the Detroit Tigers, a team that loves to remind us who won in the ALDS last year. After this, the Yankees face quite a few tough teams such as the Texas Rangers for four games, the surging Boston Red Sox, the hard-nosed Chicago White Sox along with playing the Blue Jays six times in the remainder of the month. The Yankees have no reason to really be concerned, but if they continue to play the way they have, then the concern may be legitimate. (more…)

Mitchell and Danny Farquhar. The Yankees through Brian Cashman stated time and again that they would not make any major moves because of the cost factor and because they felt that they were in a good position with the roster, not to mention they expected to have Joba Chamberlain back soon (he of course has since returned) and Alex Rodriguez and Andy Pettitte back in September. (more…)

The acquisition of Ichiro Suzuki was not only surprising, but a decent acquisition at that. Playing 11 1/2 years for one team, in this case the Seattle Mariners is quite the feat. However, there comes a point when you realize you’re more than likely going to be in the Hall of Fame and yet you still lack a ring. Ichiro said himself he had interest in playing for the New York Yankees, and well now, he is. Nick Swisher on the other hand is a guy who has always provided a solid bat with a solid glove and has a World Series ring to prove it. Both these men will be on the roster come October, because let’s face it, unless we collapse and the Baltimore Orioles or Tampa Bay Rays just can do no wrong, we’re making it to the postseason. This is familiar turf for most of the Yankees, except Ichiro. Will he finally get his ring? That’s a discussion for another time, because there is one underlying issue here, who plays right field next year? Ichiro and Swisher are both free agents after the season. Do we re-sign Ichiro? What about Swisher? How about starting anew in right field? Chase Headley of the San Diego Padres has been in much of the discussion so maybe he’ll be there. All of these and more are questions the Yankees will have to answer to and there is no easy decision. (more…)

I know, I know, we shouldn’t be looking ahead to August and September. We haven’t even gotten to the non-waiver trade deadline yet! That won’t stop Yanks Go Yard from identifying some key series in the future. Before we get into that, let’s see where the Bombers are today. Currently, they are ten games up on the second-place Baltimore Orioles. That is astonishing considering how tight the division was not even a month ago. What’s even more amazing is the fact that the Yankees have increased their lead without arguably their two best starting pitchers for the past two weeks. Now, let’s dive into how they are faring against their division rivals and how their September schedule – which features a whole month playing mostly teams within the AL East – will affect their playoff run. (more…)
