Ummm, holy s**t. Did I mention he’s 50 years old? I know he was playing against Independent League scrubs, but those are some pretty incredible numbers for a guy his age who hasn’t pitched in a MLB game since 2007. (more…)

In the big news of the day, US District Judge Reggie Walton declared a mistrial in the perjury case of Roger Clemens after noticing that the prosecution entered evidence Reggie had said was inadmissible. The evidence included testimony by Andy Pettitte’s wife, Laura, among other things.

The decision could mean that Rocket won’t have to face another trial due to double jeopardy. The judge has set a hearing date for September 2 to determine whether or not Roger can be constitutionally tried a second time.

Judge Walton:

Sadly I have reached a conclusion that to permit this case to go forward with the government having done what it did, Mr. Clemens will not get a fair trial before this jury. So I will declare a mistrial.

Walton also told prosecutors that this was a “first-year law student mistake.” Boom roasted. You can follow along with the NY Post’s coverage of the case or the Washington Post’s, if you prefer.

Call me crazy, but I’m happy for Clemens. Regardless of whether or not he used steroids (he definitely did) he will always be one of my favorites. He always went out there every five days and left everything he had on the mound.

The Yanks have called up Greg Golson to replace A-Rod on the roster. You’ll best remember the outfielder from a game last season when he threw out Carl Crawford at third to end a game against the Rays. The speedy outfielder will be activated in time for tonight’s tilt against the Blue Jays.

The Yanks have signed former Phillies <del>banned-substance user</del> World Series hero to a minor-league deal after the Nationals released him today. The team has been searching for left-handed relief, and Romero could be just the guy to help Boone Logan out with LOOGY situations. There’s a chance JC could pitch tonight in Scranton.

George King stirs some shit about Cashman not returning to the Yanks. King suggests Cash could end up with the Cubbies. However, I’m not too worried because these same rumors surfaced about Girardi going to the Cubs during the 2010 postseason.

After missing nearly three months with a strained groin, Mark Prior threw 24 pitches — with a fastball that reached 90 mph — for the GCL Yankees against Atlanta minor leaguers on Wednesday. So also threw yesterday. He tossed 25 pitches during his second batting practice session since going on the DL. Pedro Feliciano resumed a light throwing program and Damaso Marte is continuing to throw off a bullpen mound. Also in that article, the team finalized a contract with 24-year-old Cuban righty Reinier Casanova and assigned him to the GCL Yankees. I’m excited about his arrival because there could be two nicknames for him: you could take the easy route and go with a play on Casanova or get more creative and make a Rainier Wolfcastle reference. I’m looking forward to this, I really am.

Interesting interview with Roger Clemens on The Big Show (WEEI) on Friday. Although he refused to talk about his legal troubles, during the interview Roger was asked if he and Andy Pettitte are friends and still talk. His response:

We don’t. My boys went out to a game quite a bit, but we don’t.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, Pettitte’s testimony that Clemens used performance-enhancing drugs is likely what led to the indictment. If not for Andy’s testimony, it would have been Clemens’ word against Brian McNamee’s, and they probably wouldn’t have had a case. So I can’t say that I am surprised to hear this quote and that things played out this way, but it is certainly interesting to read about.

Obviously the two were the best of friends during Clemens’ first tenure in pinstripes and it is believed that when Pettitte went to the Astros it was a big factor in Clemens joining the team.

Some sad news today as former New York Yankees/Boston Red Sox/Toronto Blue Jays/Houston Astros great Roger Clemens was indicted on perjury charges. You all know the story (and if you don’t the link will get you up to date) so there’s no need to go into details.

Now I’m not sure how you all feel about Rocket, but he was one of my favorite Yankees and I am deeply saddened by this whole ordeal. Say what you want about him, but when he was wearing the pinstripes he always went out there every five days with Icy Hot on his junk and gave everything he had. I feel bad for him and hope he perseveres.

Sure, the argument could be made that he brought this whole shit storm on himself by VOLUNTEERING to testify before Congress in an attempt to clear his name, but that’s the kind of guy Clemens is. Some may call it arrogant, brash, foolish, proud or whatever, but I call it Roger being Roger. And that’s why I will always love him (no homo…not that there’s anything wrong with that).

LONG LIVE ROCKETMAN!!!!

Now I’m not trying to say the guy was a saint by any means, he clearly wasn’t. It’s pretty obvious that he used steroids, cheated on his wife and lied about both — despicable actions by any measure. But if we’re going by his performance on the field, nobody can deny his greatness (most of the same could be said about LT, but that’s another argument for another day).

We can’t hold Clemens responsible for using steroids; the vast majority of Major League Baseball was doing the same thing. We have no idea how many players were using and to what extent. Plus, there’s just as much blood on Bud Selig’s, owners’ and the Player’s Union’s hands as there is on Bonds’, Clemens’, McGwire’s, etc. If anyone should be held accountable for steroid use, it’s Selig. He turned a blind eye to this epidemic so he could make money and that’s just as bad as players growing two to three cap sizes in an offseason. Like Elie Wiesel once said, “A man who sees a crime being committed and does nothing is just as guilty as those committing the crime.” Or something along those lines. He probably definitely put it more eloquently, but you get the jist.

I know Clemens was not indicted for using steroids, he was indicted for lying to a grand jury, but I just felt I had to state how I felt about him.

Girardi on Roger:

I don’t know the particulars and I don’t really have a comment about it.

I’m sorry but it had to be done:

For all those that have been lucky enough to go to a Yankees game, you will know about the Bleacher Creatures. They are a hyper, ragtag, bunch of people that make their fandom known from the cheap seats. They keep it grimy, but mostly because they all get drunk before the game since no alcohol is allowed in the bleachers. Kidding! Sort of…

Anyway, with last night’s first game at the new Yankee Stadium came the first traditional roll call from beyond the wall at the top of the first inning when the Yankees are on the field. I’ve been lucky enough (read: poor enough) to sit in the bleachers when this happens and nothing beats the one minute madness that ensues with acknowledgment from the players. One time, the best Yankees fans on earth were calling out to Roger Clemens, who didn’t acknowledge them… he got booed. Seriously, even if you need to concentrate and pitch, you can’t deny the Bleacher Creatures!!!
