My oldest brother, Augie, called me the other day and said “Hey, happy 44 … Reggie Jackson.”

Yep, it may have been my birthday, but the number 44 belongs to Reggie Jackson and that’s just the way it is. And should be. Reggie earned it with three homers on three pitches against three different pitchers in the 1977 World Series. He also deserves 44 forever for 563 career homers with 1,702 RBI and over 2,500 hits.

To be clear, Jackson, who serves as a consultant for the Yanks, started out his career as No. 9 in Oakland. But in New York, Graig Nettles had that number covered at third. Reggie’s second choice, No. 42 for Jackie Robinson, was also taken by pitching coach Art Fowler, so that left Jax with No. 44 to make his.

Reggie Jackson-wiki

Did he ever, earning five of his 14 career All Star appearances while in the Bronx, finishing as MVP runner-up in 1980 for a 41-homer, 111 RBI campaign.

Reggie, who also starred for the A’s and Angels, had his downsides to be sure, like his MLB career-record 2,571 strikeouts, choppy fielding with 142 career errors in the outfield (tops among outfielders in five seasons) and enormous ego that understandably rubbed some teammates and managers (notably Billy Martin) the wrong way.

But when it came time to deliver, even Thurman Munson knew who Mr. October was. Heck, Munson was the one who first coined the phrase. Reggie stepped up his play like few others in the World Series, amassing a .357 batting average with 10 homers and 24 RBI in five appearances.

So, while I may be 44 for a time, Reggie Jackson truly is THE No. 44.

Chambliss’ round-tripper, off Mark Littell in the 1976 ALCS, propelled the Yankees to the World Series for the first time since 1964: an eternity for a possible championship for the 27-time titlists.

Of course, the Big Red Machine flattened the Bombers in that series, 4-0, but it wasn’t because of Chambliss, who hit .313. The Yankees rebounded, as they have throughout their marvelous history, to win the next two World Series over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Cleveland Indians product, now the hitting instructor for the Seattle Mariners, was one in a long line of cool and classy pros to don the Pinstripes; a real clutch performer. He hit an ALCS record .524 with 2 home runs and eight RBI in ’76, an amazing series from the unflappable first baseman. It’s great to see his homer played over and over on the YES Network, still spine-tingling, in fact.

Alex Rodrigruez and Andy Pettite both came through this morning’s simulated game with no major issues, although neither was quite ready to call it a smashing success. “I felt good,” Rodriguez said. “[Pettitte] looked great. I’m glad I don’t have to face him every day.” Pettitte was a little less than glowing about his own performance. “It is a step in the right direction,” Pettitte said. Thanks for that, Andy. Don’t go too far out on a limb. The lefty does hope to pitch in a minor league game on Wednesday – if that goes according to plan, he could be on the bump for the Yanks 5 days later. That night? The opener of what could be a crucial series in Steinbrenner-land against the Rays. Keep your fingers crossed, Yankees fans. As far as A-Rod possibly being activated tomorrow when he’s eligible, Joe Girardi says the team will wait until tomorrow morning to make that decision. One lighter note about the simulated game…the umpire. None other than Mr. October himself, Reggie Jackson was camped out behind the cage calling balls and strikes, even punching A-Rod out once. Not literally, of course. No Billy Martin action here.

One pre-game note from today’s actual game. Nick Swisher is a late scratch once again, so Marcus Thames moves into Swish’s spot in right, and the A-Rod driller Lance Berkman takes over at DH. And, speaking of returns, keep an eye on Javy Vazquez as he returns to the rotation this afternoon.

The first game at the new Yankee Stadium took place in a wet climate, filled with a palpable excitement, and that fresh new stadium smell. The Chicago Cubs may have had the first player to ever get a hit at the new ballpark in Aaron Miles, but they didn’t have enough to stop the first Yankee to ever get a hit, Derek Jeter, and the power strokes of Robinson Cano (two-run homer in the second inning), Hideki Matsui (two-run dinger in the third), and Cody Ransom (three-run blast in the fourth) as the New York Yankees went on to win 7-4.

Reggie Jackson threw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Yankees, which seemed appropriate as Jackson was the first high-priced Yankee that was either loved or hate because of the money surrounding him, but also the undeniable talent. Sound familiar?

In any case, Yankee starter Chien-Ming Wang looked off and is still in the middle of getting back to form as he pitched five innings, gave up four runs on six hits, and struck out three versus walking two. This was Wang’s first win of spring training, but the Yankees’ ninth consecutive W. They are 23-10 overall this spring. The Yankees look to continue their winning streak with another exhibition game at the Stadium versus the very same Cubs on Saturday.

Don’t forget to look at the poll on the right sidebar and click on how many wins you think the Yankees will end up with this season.
When you go to Yankees Stadium to take in a game, there are a few things you can be guaranteed of – 1) the Bleacher Creatures rule 2) the price for food and beverages will make even millionaires go, “DAMN! Is that really the price?!?!?!” and 3) Bob Sheppard will make your baseball experience feel authentic. Sheppard, the Yankees public address announcer since April 17, 1951 and who has called out the Yankees starting lineup that included such names as Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Thurman Munson, and Derek Jeter will miss Opening Day at the new Yankees Stadium due to a bronchial infection. Sheppard missed announcing all of last season and is 98 years old, but is determined to come back sometime this season. Reggie Jackson nicknamed Sheppard, “the voice of God” and let’s hope the new stadium will be blessed with Sheppard’s voice soon.
