One would have to imagine that following a fantastic 2012 season by doing the impossible, filling the shoes (or rather, cleats), of Mariano Rivera, Rafael Soriano was making the smart call by exercising his player opt-out and rejected a one-year tender by the Yankees in order to seek a more lucrative, long-term deal outside of New York. And with Scott Boras as his agent, few doubted he would get exactly the deal he wanted from some owner who desperately wanted a championship. Except here we are: it’s now the middle of January, 2013, and Soriano has no deal. In fact, there is almost no market for him given the parameters of the new CBA. With reports lately that the Yankees have no interest in bringing back their one-time closer, the question still remains: should the Yankees re-sign Soriano?

With the image of Mariano Rivera crumpled on the grass at the warning track at Kauffman Stadium seared into the collective mind of all of Yankee-dom, panic rose in the Bronx. What would the Yankees do without their iconic closer whose production simply could not be replaced? The Yankees announced this afternoon that rightly reliever Rafael Soriano has decided to opt out of his 14 million dollar player option for 2013. His agent, Scott Boras, told Yankee president Randy Levine that be believes Soriano can get four or more years at upwards of $15 million per year. (more…)

The Hot Stove season will be heating up soon–although, one could argue that after the disappointing ALCS sweep, that has already begun for the Yankees. Much of the conversation has swirled thus far around Alex Rodriguez, Nick Swisher and Curtis Granderson after their abysmal postseason performances. Other conversation has talked about Russell Martin, and whether or not he should be offered a free-agent contract after his down year in 2012. The New York Yankees are on a roll and it’s their pitching doing most of the leg work. Freddy Garcia continues to be reliable, if not better, than some of his younger cohorts. New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi couldn’t have been happier with Derek Lowe‘s first performance in pinstripes. Lowe pitched four innings of scoreless relief, earning his first save since 2001. He struck out four batters and allowed only two base runners, both via singles. He reinvented his sinker ball at least for one night and further exemplified the depth and quality of the Yankees bullpen. For Girardi it meant one more veteran arm in the bullpen who he can call on to eat up innings. (more…)

The Yankees’ road trip started off rocky in Comerica Park and had chances to become a disaster. However, the New York Yankees were able to find a way to salvage a split from Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, and company. The game yesterday was epic. You had Joe Girardi’s ejection to liven up the team and then you throw in back-to-back home runs from Mark Teixeira and Eric Chavez. Finally, Rafael Soriano was able to close out the game despite falling into a big jam in the 9th inning. Now, the Yankees maintain a 5.5 game lead on the Baltimore Orioles as they go north of the border for the weekend.

Teixeira and Chavez homer on consecutive pitches to rally Yankees over Tigers

The New York Yankees took a step in the right direction yesterday winning their second straight game, salvaging a split with the Detroit Tigers and ended a spell of eight consecutive losses in games decided by one run. They did it with an eighth inning rally which consisted of two pitches. (more…)
