The first month of the season for the New York Yankees has been highlighted by a number of different things: the continued plague of injuries, the set-back to Derek Jeter, and the considerable contributions from first-year veterans like Travis Hafner, Vernon Wells, and Kevin Youkilis. But one very big development for the Yankees has gone very much unnoticed: the evolution of Phil Hughes.

Phil Hughes: Slow Starter

There’s no sugar-coating Phil Hughes’ performance this past weekend against the Orioles. After giving up three homers to the O’s and struggling against the Tigers in Detroit, this season hasn’t exactly started off the way Hughes and the Yankees would like. Fans are quick to boo the starter, and he hasn’t exactly given them reason not to, but they should also take a step back.

Just a few days ago Phil Hughes avoided arbitration by inking a one-year, $7.15 million deal for the 2013 season. It’s his last arbitration-eligible year and he’ll be a free agent at the end of this season. A couple of short, but important, news items on the docket today. Both Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain avoid arbitration, both agreeing to one-year deals. For Hughes it was his last trip through arbitration, as he is eligible for free agency after this season. As for Chamberlain, this is also his last time through arbitration before becoming a free agent. So the Yankees have some thinking to do before doling out multi-year deals for both of these pitchers. Trade, Extend or Let Him Walk: What To Do About Phil Hughes

One of the most frustrating players in the last few years for the Yankees has always been Phil Hughes. Is he a starter or a relief pitcher? Is he hurt or is he healthy? Does he give up too many home runs? Should the team trade him? It seems that some of the questions have finally been answered, as Hughes produced another successful season in 2012. (While 2011 was washed out with a “dead arm” injury, it’s worth pointing out that it could be attributed to pitching almost 100 more innings than any other season of his career in 2010.) With 16 wins, a respectable ERA, return to normal velocity and, most importantly, a season unmarked by injury, Hughes took a step forward this season despite a rocky first month. Bear in mind, however, that Hughes is also a free agent in 2014. All of which raises a new question: with the Yankees slashing payroll, the cost of free agent pitching rising, and a relatively hot commodity in their laps, what should the Yankees do about Phil Hughes?
