Sometimes it takes a little while for players to bounce back from an injury. For Phil Hughes, he battled a back injury all spring and struggled early on this season. Hughes has really started to put it together now and if he continues pitching this well, he earn himself a nice chunk of change whether it be from the Yankees or another team. Hughes went eight shutout innings, as the Yankees beat the A’s 4-2. (more…)

The Yankees and the month of August

So clearly, it’s been noted that the New York Yankees have had somewhat of an unusual trend of losing games lately. Since the All-Star break, the Yankees have gone 11-11 and their streak of dominance in the MLB has been currently won over by the Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds who now both hold better records than the Bombers. Even the Baltimore Orioles who sit 5.5 games out of first in the AL East are going nowhere but up, especially with the Tampa Bay Rays on their tail. Out of those 11 wins, six of them came from the softer teams in the AL such as the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays. When the Yankees have faced contending teams as of late, such as the Oakland A’s, the Yanks seem to falter a bit. Currently, they’re locked in a four-game series with the Detroit Tigers, a team that loves to remind us who won in the ALDS last year. After this, the Yankees face quite a few tough teams such as the Texas Rangers for four games, the surging Boston Red Sox, the hard-nosed Chicago White Sox along with playing the Blue Jays six times in the remainder of the month. The Yankees have no reason to really be concerned, but if they continue to play the way they have, then the concern may be legitimate. (more…)

The New York Yankees came into last night’s game against the Oakland A’s riding a three-game win streak and had previously won nine straight at Oakland Coliseum. But, the Athletics are rolling right now too and rookie A.J. Griffin kept the Bombers off the scoreboard for the first five innings, while his offense reached Freddy Garcia for four runs in the first three innings, on the way to a 4-3 victory over the Yankees to the delight of hundreds of barking dogs. Yankees gain sweep of A’s as Kuroda shines in 2-0 triumph

The New York Yankees, behind Hiroki Kuroda‘s eight shutout innings, swept the Oakland A’s and in the process won their season-high fifth straight game. The Yankees had won the first two games of the series with dominant bats, but this time they needed and received a fantastic performance from Kuroda. (more…)

If the New York Yankees were given the opportunity to draw up the results of a game, they may have used yesterday’s pummeling of the Oakland A’s as a blueprint. The Yankees won their fourth straight game as CC Sabathia pitched seven strong innings and the offense provided plenty of support led by Mark Teixeira‘s two home runs and five RBI. (more…)

New York is coming out west on a good note, winning their last two games against the Kansas City Royals and getting some pop from the offense, particularly Alex Rodriguez.

Glad Yanks ‘Hooked’ Catfish Hunter

One of the cool things about moving to North Carolina from Long Island was learning that a couple of radio stations “here” actually carry the Yankees.
Another was driving by Hertford, the birthplace of one of the great Yankee pitchers: Jim “Catfish” Hunter.

To be fair, you can’t just gloss over how good Hunter was with the Oakland A’s, his team prior to signing with the Yankees in 1975. “Catfish”, given that nickname by eccentric A’s owner Charles O. Finley, racked up four (and a fifth with the Yanks) straight seasons with 20 or more wins and tossed a rare perfecto. He was also a part of the reason the powerhouse A’s collected four World Series titles.

It had to stick in A’s owner Charles O. Finley’s “craw” to lose Catfish to the Yanks, where he became the highest paid pitcher in the sport in 1975. Hunter earned the dough, leading the league in wins with 23 and innings pitched with 328. And there was no “Gotta Go To Mo’” as in current Yanks relief great Mariano Rivera. Hunter tossed an amazing 30 complete games … not in his career … but in that ONE season.

“Catfish” and the Yanks went on to win three straight pennants in the late 70′s, but the effects of diabetes forced him to retire in 1979. The eight-time All Star and 1974 Cy Young award winner left with 224 wins and just over 2,000 strikeouts to earn induction into baseball’s Hall of Fame.
Although he died in 1999 of Lou Gehrig’s Disease, Hunter’s legacy lives on in an annual softball game played in his memory in Hertford. It has raised over $100,000 for ALS research.

Although the A’s owner reportedly had no reason for stamping Hunter with the “Catfish” nickname perhaps it was apt for how he reeled us all in to watching a truly professional pitcher perform.
