Bernie Williams is perhaps remembered most for his ability to come through in the clutch. The big home run, the great catch, the knack for finding a way to get the job done were all part of his mystique.

But those who followed him closely all remember his smile. It is such a part of his character, that it seems as if it is a permanent part of his body. The rest of us were created with a mouth, Williams was given a smile. (more…)

I Was Wrong About Vernon Wells

One of the greatest things about writing for a blog like Yanks Go Yard is the ability to put your opinion out there about the dealings of all things Yankees. However, an important aspect of writing like this is that a person needs to take accountability for what is written, particularly if what was written turns on to be wrong. With that said, here it is: I was totally and completely wrong about Vernon Wells. And I couldn’t be happier about that.

YGY Series Preview Show: Yankees-Orioles (5/20-5/22)

Even though the New York Yankees’ homestand was abbreviated because of Sunday’s postponement, the Bronx Bombers (27-16) were still able to go 3-2, including a two game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays. In this series, the young players in David Adams and Austin Romine got some big hits in timely situations on Friday. There was masterful pitching by Hiroki Kuroda on Friday and even David Phelps put up a solid outing on Saturday. Not to mention, Yankees’ fans saw two home runs from Robinson Cano and the return of Travis Hafner. New York may have also caught a break from the rain because now they could skip Vidal Nuno, who was taking Andy Pettitte‘s place in the rotation while he is on the disabled list. That means also that CC Sabathia will now make his start Monday night against a team that he was great against last year in the ALDS that is going through some turmoil themselves in the month of May.

The Baltimore Orioles (23-20) have hit their own slide in the month of May as they come into this series on a five-game losing streak. This streak entails being swept by both the San Diego Padres and the Tampa Bay Rays. The team lost one of its most consistent pitchers in Wei-Yin Chen to a strained right oblique injury and has seen their great closer (Jim Johnson) blow each of his last two save chances. That being said, this is a team that packs a punch on the offensive side. They are 3rd in the MLB in runs scored and 5th in batting average. Plus, the Orioles have seen the young career of Manny Machado bloom right in front of them. The third baseman is hitting .328 with five home runs and 26 RBI’s. Manager Buck Showalter is able to put him anywhere in the lineup and create a dangerous top of the order with Machado, first baseman Chris Davis (12 home runs), and center fielder Adam Jones (.322 average).

Going into 2013, we all knew about the Yankees “austerity” plan; get below $189 million for 2014. So in free agency, they re-signed their own guys, like Hiroki Kuroda and added guys like Travis Hafner to one year deals. The only guy who got more than one year was Ichiro Suzuki. He got a two year deal with the thinking that he’d be the right fielder for the next two years. Now the question is, should he even be starting right now? (more…)
