With pitchers and catchers due to report early next week (YAY!!!), we have some news centered around two young hurlers. First, former Cy Young award winner, Felix Hernandez, is on the verge of an extension with the Seattle Mariners. We are within a few weeks of pitchers and catchers reporting to Spring Training. As such, the Yankees are filling out their Spring Training invite list and got some good news regarding one of their young pitchers. The club signed OF/1B/DH Juan Rivera, who started his career with the team back in 1996. Meanwhile, Michael Pineda makes another step toward pitching in the Bronx. (more…)

With the state that the back-end of the rotation is in, at least the spot of the fifth man, the New York Yankees are going to expect big things from Michael Pineda. Unfortunately for both parties, Pineda won’t be back until June at the earliest. We like to speculate who that fifth spot belongs to and with David Phelps and Ivan Nova already fighting for it, this creates a small window for Pineda to fit in. Now, where does Pineda fit with the Yankees once he comes back?

DUI Arrest Won’t Affect Michael Pineda’s 2013 Performance

Michael Pineda, injured starting pitcher for the New York Yankees, was recently arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in Tampa, as Chris Carelli wrote yesterday. This looks pretty bad for Pineda, who had already come under criticism for coming into spring training at least 10 pounds overweight and out of shape. However, although his arrest certainly doesn’t say a lot about Pineda’s judgement and professionalism, it shouldn’t affect our perceptions of him as a player, or his future performance with the Yankees. Yankees’ Michael Pineda picked up this morning for DUI in Tampa

New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda, who was acquired in a trade with the Seattle Mariners for highly touted catching prospect Jesus Montero in the offseason, was picked up early this morning by Tampa police and charged with DUI. (more…)

Nick Swisher’s Yankee Future

The one thing I’ve noticed that every team needs is a guy like Nick Swisher. He’s goofy, quirky, funny, but still can be serious at the same time. Swisher lets his teammates remember that at the end of the day, baseball is still just a game of fun. However, will there be a time when Swisher’s presence is gone from the clubhouse? I’d hate to think so, but the reality is there. Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson will be free agents after 2013. This predicament begs the question of whether or not the New York Yankees can keep Swisher beyond the end of this season when he will be a free agent. With the Yankees being hit hard by a luxury tax, the Boss’ (may he rest in peace) ways of buying who you wanted, when you wanted, are long gone. Brian Cashman is a smart man and has invested in many deals like Michael Pineda that speak volumes about the future and that the money is being spent on guys who can keep the team going. Personally, I’d love to keep Swisher beyond 2012, but keeping Cano and Granderson might be a higher priority on the Yankees’ list. (more…)

Four players the Yankees could do without after 2012

For every team, there are guys worth keeping and guys that have worn out their welcome. For the New York Yankees, the biggest player to wear out their welcome is Ramiro Pena. Pena has never been what the Yankees expected to be in the majors, hence why he is always in Triple-A. Eduardo Nunez is the second man that comes to mind. While he may have been considered to be Derek Jeter’s successor someday, it just isn’t meant to be. Freddy Garcia has just been there as a back-up option and really, what benefit is it to us to have a man who can barely pitch relief at times, let alone start? The last guy the Yankees can part ways with after this season is Andruw Jones. He’s old, he can’t hit as good as he used to and we just have no use for older platoon players that have no production to offer us, especially when we face major injuries, much like with Brett Gardner. These four men are guys the Yankees should just cut their losses with because not only are there better players out there, but we have players in our farm leagues who need their time to shine as well. Should The Yankees Trade For Matt Garza?

With the loss of CC Sabathia until after the All-Star break and Andy Pettitte out for at least 6 weeks, the Yankees are left with a lot of question marks in their rotation. Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman has already come out and said that the Yankees would “prefer not to go outside (the organization)” While I agree going outside the organization is not preferred when you’re the Yankees and the expectation is the World Series or bust than you must explore all your options and I believe Matt Garza to be the best option. Why Has Andy Pettitte Been Successful In 2012?

After Andy Pettitte retired concluding the 2010 season, many believed the lefty still had some magic left in the tank. He finished an injury plagued season with an 11-3 record in only 21 starts and a 3.28 ERA. Pettitte’s injury, a strained left groin, was by no means career threatening, but the Yankee pitcher decided he was done and retired. However, after spending 2011 at home, the Yankee legend again had the “itch” to pitch and has thus far been the biggest surprise of the Yankees 2012 season. (more…)
