As you may or may not know, the New York Yankees agreed about a week ago with first-round draft pick Ty Hensley on a one-year contract with a $1.2 million signing bonus. Hensley pitched for Edmond Santa Fe High School and was just drafted in June. From what scouts have seen from Hensley, the kid has nothing but positives about him. At 18, Hensley definitely has time to adapt to the Yankee way of baseball, but when he is up here, how much will he affect the team? Will it be positive or negative? All these questions and more will not be answered for awhile. For now, Hensley finds himself pitching in the minors, but has set himself a goal to be pitching in the majors by 21. Let’s see if he can do that. (more…)

How does the old saying go, you can never have too much pitching? Well clearly that’s the case if Joba Chamberlain is able to make a return sometime this season. Recently, reports have said that Chamberlain is somewhere on the road to recovery and is ready to start making some appearances in the minor leagues within two weeks. Chamberlain’s role is a bit tricky though. The bullpen has been doing extremely well this season and Chamberlain hasn’t pitched since June of 2011 so his absence from the MLB may be somewhat of a factor. Regardless, the Yankees won’t spring Chamberlain back into that role, especially if they aren’t hurting for pitching. D.J. Mitchell, who was recently called up, is expected to add some depth to the bullpen as he is taking over Cory Wade’s role for the time being. So with the Yankees trusting younger pitchers like Mitchell, the pitching is sailing fine for now, but how much of an impact will Chamberlain make later on?

The Yankees announced late on Friday afternoon that Larry Rothschild will succeed Dave Eiland as pitching coach. He signed a three-year deal.

Rothschild has been in Major League Baseball for 36 years as a player/coach/manager. He wasn’t exactly a hall-of-fame player, but he was the first manager in Devil Rays history (1998-2001), was the Cubs pitching coach from 2002-2010 and also served on the staff of the 1990 Reds and 1997 Marlins World Series champion teams. Interesting tid-bit: Larry Rothschild managed Dave Eiland while he was on the Rays.

Larry’s pitching staffs from 2002-2010 put up 11,604 strikeouts, the best in MLB over that span. It’s good to have you aboard Larry, now fix AJ Burnett.

Girardi on Rothschild:

Larry brings a wealth of invaluable experience to our team and to our pitching staff. He’s a championship pitching coach, and I’m excited to add Larry’s abilities to our staff. He is above all else an excellent teacher, who brings a professional attitude and a keen sense of preparation to his craft. I’m very much looking forward to working with him moving forward.

Rothschild:

I grew up in Chicago but my dad is a life-long Yankee fan. This put a huge smile on his face.

The Yanks also made some other moves:
