Hiroki Kuroda game in and game out has been the Yankees most consistent pitcher this season. He’s kept the team in the game whether he has his good stuff or not. Today, he improved to 5-2 on the year, going 7.2 innings, giving up two runs, as the Yankees beat the Royals 4-2 and swept the weekend series in Kansas City. (more…)

Andy Pettitte had been struggling of late. His pitches had been up and he’s been getting hit hard. Some of his comments about his pitching were a little bit disconcerting to say the least. Doing something positive 500 times in baseball will put you in elite company (home runs, wins etc). For Joe Girardi, last night’s 11-6 win over the Kansas City Royals gave the skipper his 500th win as manager. He joined Billy Martin, Joe Torre, Ralph Houk, Casey Stengel, Miller Huggins and Joe McCarthy in the club, in only his 844th game as Yankee manager. (more…)

Two important cogs in the New York Yankees machine were working in fine fashion in last night’s 8-3 thumping of the Kansas City Royals. Andy Pettitte, while not as masterful as he was in his last start, pitched seven plus innings of two-run ball (both solo homers) and Alex Rodriguez drilled two home runs in a game for the first time in over a year. Solid all-around effort boosts Yankees to 3-2 win over Royals

The New York Yankees 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals last night did not come with a breakout offensive performance. Instead, they received solid pitching performances from Phil Hughes and a collection of relievers and just enough run support to get into the win column, moving them one game above .500 and out of the AL East cellar for at least one day. So far, the homestand for the New York Yankees has been a rocky road for the offense. Over the past week, as has been discussed on this site, the clutch hits are just not happening. Fans are looking for scapegoats as the team is closer to last place than first place. The Bombers will look to fix those clutch hitting woes as they begin a three-game series with the Kansas City Royals (16-24) tonight at Yankee Stadium.

Notes from Thurday + Friday’s lineup

Here are some notes from last night’s epic 10-4 win over the Royals:

Posada played in his 1,659th career game, which ties him with Tony Lazzeri for 14th in franchise history. He’ll obviously move into 13th place tonight. He also drove in his 999th run.
In case you didn’t hear, A-Rod belted his 599th career home run. He also hit 499 and 500 against the Royals. Fun fact: he hit #500 on a Saturday day game off Kyle Davies, guess who’s pitching on Saturday.
CC (13-3) moved to 16-10 lifetime against the Royals. He gave up a first-inning run for the first time at home since April 16 and it was the first time with the Yanks he has allowed multiple runs in the top of the first. He also committed his first balk since April 22, 2008. He gave up double digit hits once last year, Thursday (11 hits) was the third time this season he’s done it.
Bruce Chen has only beaten the Yanks once in 15 appearances (11 starts), but the one win was a complete game four-hitter with the O’s in 2005.
Tex has reached base safely in 38 straight games.
Seven of the first 10 KC batters got hits off CC before he settled down.
Jeter’s inside-the-parker was his first HR in 124 at-bats and his second career inside-the-park home run. The other one came on August 2 of 1996 (his sixth career homer in his rookie campaign) and was also against the Royals…Joe Girardi scored on that one. Jeet is now seven for his last 19, and has hopefully put his rough patch behind him.
Since the Cliff Lee trade fell through Jesus Montero, one of the players who would have been shipped to Seattle, is 16-for-30 (.533 average). Meanwhile, Cliff Lee has allowed four homers in three starts since joining the Rangers. He had given up a total of five dingers in 13 starts with the Mariners.
Brett Gardner is one for his last 18.
Thursday was the second time this season that the Yanks have had back-to-back 10-or-more-run games. The other time was against Boston on May 7th and 8th.
There have been 58 hits at Yankee Stadium over the past two games.
With the win, coupled with the Rays’ off day, the Yanks opened a three-game lead in the division (seven games over third-place Boston).
Not for the faint of heart: Carl Pavano has won a career-best seven straight decisions and moved to 12-6 on the year, he had a total of nine wins in four years with the Yanks.

The Futility List: Bottom To Top – Ranking Week 1

The Futility List is all about that… futility. Sure, many another website will give you a nice and clean MLB team power rankings, listing the league from top to bottom, but I say those teams at the end need love too. So, we’ll start our list at the bottom! It’s not all about the breast… err, best team, you know!

Let’s put the face down and the bottoms up… wait, I’m mixing metaphors again… and let’s get to the first edition of THE FUTILITY LIST!

1. Washington Nationals (0-6)- If baseball were a bar, the Nats would be the guy in the corner with a drink in hand, standing alone, and sweating. Profusely.

2. New York Yankees (3-3) – Going .500 combined against the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals, two teams not expected to do much this season except watch the “real” franchises above them, is not a good way to get out of the gate. So with the expectation factor in mind, this ranking is about as right as two ugly lesbians being a couple.
