New York Yankees Food For Thought: Justin Verlander in the rotation?

Relax, relax, this is more than likely never going to happen. Recently, the Detroit Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander mentioned how cool it would be for teams to fight over him once he hits free agency. Now, like with any other big name free agent, the New York Yankees are automatically thrown into the ring. Let’s say for the sake of argument that it is possible for Verlander to become a Yankee. Would signing Verlander be worth the giving up of draft picks and money? Is a long-term deal with someone like Verlander a possibility in New York?

Nova can’t hang with Verlander; Tigers beat Yankees 7-2

I’m throwing out advanced statistics in favor of some lighter reading today. It’s an off-day for the Yankees today, you’re probably a zombie after the Fourth of July festivities, and the All-Star game is coming up in less than a week. So, on the heels of facing Tampa Bay Rays’ ace, David Price, I thought it would be a good idea to see how the Yankees have performed against their opponents’ staff aces, plus a handful of other pitchers who I consider “all-star caliber”. They were able to pass the test with consistent quality starts from their starting pitching and the big bats coming through.The telling game of the road trip occurred last Sunday. After a tough loss against the Tigers on Saturday, Derek Jeter homered on the first pitch against reigning AL MVP Justin Verlander and Phil Hughes threw a complete game. Now, they face a six game homestand against some tough starting pitching from both the Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Mets.

While the Yankees’ trip to Los Angeles was not as great as fans would hope, they were still able to salvage the series thanks to the long ball from Curtis Granderson (former Tiger) and Robinson Cano. The bullpen also held its own as the New York Yankees end their West Coast trip with a 4-2 record. Now, they will finish up their road trip with a visit to Comerica Park against the struggling Detroit Tigers (24-27)

The New York Yankees are set to take on a Detroit Tigers team which is suffering from the same issues; inconsistency and underachievement. The Yanks (27-23) are looking to build on a 4-2 record on the nine-game road trip, while the Tigers (24-27) are returning home after a 4-6 road trip highlighted by a pair of three-game losing streaks with a three-game win streak in the middle.
