Considering the Asking Price, is Justin Upton Worth It?

Last week, Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton invoked his no-trade clause in order to stop a trade to the Seattle Mariners. The Diamondbacks would have received SS/2B Nick Franklin, RHP Charlie Furbush, RHP Stephen Pryor and RHP Taijuan Walker in return. To put that in perspective, that would have been there #1 prospect (Walker), their #4 (Franklin) and #15 (Pryor), along with a fringy young reliever (Furbush). That is a hefty price for a player of Upton’s caliber, but is he worth it? (more…)

An offseason mired by a $189 million budget and a desolate free agent pool, at least in terms of what the Yankees need, has the team looking for other ways to fill in gaps. It is just days into the offseason, we all are trying to transition swiftly into it while pondering all the possible moves that Brian Cashman and the Yankees could make. The anticipation of the off-season is what makes it exciting for baseball fans. There’s an anxiety to the offseason when your team could be picking up a big name player, who could be the missing piece to your team’s eventual success. For some time now, the Yankees have been rumored to be one of the candidates for a trade involving Justin Upton. This didn’t seem reasonable 2-3 years ago due to a lack of flexibility in the team’s outfield. Now wish Nick Swisher being on his way out now and Curtis Granderson likely on his way out in late 2013, the front office has some outfield positions to fill.

The New York Yankees have traded D.J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar to the Seattle Mariners for Ichiro Suzuki and cash first reported by Jack Curry of the YES Network via Twitter. Ichiro will be in tonight’s lineup for the Yankees, but the position in the lineup has yet to be determined by manager Joe Girardi. (more…)

Yankees should stand pat in the outfield even if Gardner is done for season

Upon word yesterday that Brett Gardner suffered another setback, his third such instance since he was shelved on April 17 with a right elbow strain, the rumor mill became awash with potential options the New York Yankees should explore to fill Gardner’s shoes if it was determined he would miss the rest of the season. What should the Yankees do? Explore the market to replace Gardner or stand pat with the current crew in left field? My feeling is they should resist any urge to make a deal and here is why. (more…)

Nick Swisher’s Yankee Future

The one thing I’ve noticed that every team needs is a guy like Nick Swisher. He’s goofy, quirky, funny, but still can be serious at the same time. Swisher lets his teammates remember that at the end of the day, baseball is still just a game of fun. However, will there be a time when Swisher’s presence is gone from the clubhouse? I’d hate to think so, but the reality is there. Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson will be free agents after 2013. This predicament begs the question of whether or not the New York Yankees can keep Swisher beyond the end of this season when he will be a free agent. With the Yankees being hit hard by a luxury tax, the Boss’ (may he rest in peace) ways of buying who you wanted, when you wanted, are long gone. Brian Cashman is a smart man and has invested in many deals like Michael Pineda that speak volumes about the future and that the money is being spent on guys who can keep the team going. Personally, I’d love to keep Swisher beyond 2012, but keeping Cano and Granderson might be a higher priority on the Yankees’ list. (more…)

The Futility List: Bottom To Top – Ranking Week 1

The Futility List is all about that… futility. Sure, many another website will give you a nice and clean MLB team power rankings, listing the league from top to bottom, but I say those teams at the end need love too. So, we’ll start our list at the bottom! It’s not all about the breast… err, best team, you know!

Let’s put the face down and the bottoms up… wait, I’m mixing metaphors again… and let’s get to the first edition of THE FUTILITY LIST!

1. Washington Nationals (0-6)- If baseball were a bar, the Nats would be the guy in the corner with a drink in hand, standing alone, and sweating. Profusely.

2. New York Yankees (3-3) – Going .500 combined against the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals, two teams not expected to do much this season except watch the “real” franchises above them, is not a good way to get out of the gate. So with the expectation factor in mind, this ranking is about as right as two ugly lesbians being a couple.
