The New York Yankees were on the unfortunate side of Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Jon Lester‘s turning the corner on an otherwise forgetful season. Boston’s ace, has now won back-to-back games after a stretch with no wins in seven starts. He out-dueled David Phelps who was solid in his second effort as a fill-in for injured CC Sabathia. (more…)

Well, if this week vs. the Texas Rangers was supposed to be a postseason preview for the New York Yankees, then the Bronx Bombers passed the test. Although they got disappointing pitching from Ivan Nova and the Yankees’ bullpen on Thursday, they were still able to win three of four from the Rangers. The reasons for that were because of their starting pitching, Derek Lowe, and opportune hitting from guys such as Nick Swisher. Now, with a little over six weeks to go, it’s time for the Yankees to pass another test and the next exam comes with a little twist of revenge.

MLB Trade Deadline: Did the Yankees measure up with the rest of the AL East?

On Tuesday at 4:00 pm, the New York Yankees made a minor yet important trade getting Casey McGehee from the Pittsburgh Pirates for soon to be DFA’d reliever Chad Qualls. It was the second deal completed by the Yankees in advance of the non-waiver deadline. The first, which you can see analysis of here, was getting Ichiro Suzuki and cash from the Seattle Mariners for two minor league pitchers, D.J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar. The Yankees through Brian Cashman stated time and again that they would not make any major moves because of the cost factor and because they felt that they were in a good position with the roster, not to mention they expected to have Joba Chamberlain back soon (he of course has since returned) and Alex Rodriguez and Andy Pettitte back in September. Beckett, Boston blank Bombers. Bummer.

The Yanks were silenced by the Red Sox, 4-0, in the finale of a three-game set on Sunday. In doing so, they dropped their first series of the season and fell to 5-4, tied with the Blue Jays for second place, one game behind the O’s.

Josh Beckett was absolutely lights out, giving up only two hits over eight innings while fanning 10 and walking just one batter. There’s not much you can do when the opposing pitcher is on like that. Just move on and focus on the next one.

CC wasn’t at his best, but he fought and limited the Sox. The big guy went 5 2/3 innings and gave up nine hits and four walks but just one run; it really should have been much worse.
